Arediou-Vouppes: Exploring a Rural Community in Late Bronze Age Cyprus

Summary of the impact

The Arediou Vouppes project has been examining a Late Bronze Age settlement in the Cypriot rural hinterland, specifically focusing on the archaeological characterisation of a little-known type of agricultural site. A key aspect of the project has been to promote a wider understanding of the value and relevance of the past (both recent and ancient) as a means of safeguarding the archaeological record for future generations through the encouragement of local engagement in the construction of narratives of cultural heritage. Our primary beneficiaries have been identified as members of the local Cypriot community at Arediou, although we have also sought to foster an improved sensitivity to community perspectives of `the past' from heritage custodians in Cyprus which will inform their practice.

Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru / A Dictionary of the Welsh Language

Summary of the impact

Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru (GPC) is a historical dictionary similar to the Oxford English Dictionary, and is the acknowledged authority on the spelling, derivation and meaning of Welsh words. Apart from its scholarly uses, it is used in all areas of the Welsh public sphere, providing the lexical information necessary to produce terminology for bilingual documentation in fields such as government, education, health, law and business. GPC has always had a network of voluntary readers and informants, and uses both old and new media to seek examples of contemporary usage and to promote public interest in the language. A concise version of the dictionary has been freely available online since 2003, and a full version will be launched in 2014.

Global Forum on Oceans, Coasts, and Islands

Summary of the impact

Professor Mike Philips' research has contributed to understandings of coastal erosion causes, its impacts, mitigation and adaptation strategies. His research and his involvement in numerous policy networks including most notably the Global Forum on Oceans, Coasts, and Islands (GOFCI) has influenced coastal policy discussion and outcomes at a global level. The research has led to coastal tourism and climate change being considered at the highest political level. This is evidenced by Phillips's contribution to international policy documents and processes, such as Rio +20, and wide public and professional recognition.

Scientific Advice to Belron Technical Ltd on Windscreen Impact Damage

Summary of the impact

Belron® is the world's largest dedicated vehicle glass repair and replacement company, operating in 35 countries and serving 10 million motorists each year. Annual turnover exceeds 2.7 billion Euros. In 2007, Prof Donne published the first ever peer-reviewed paper on vehicle glass repair, which demonstrated that the resin injection process significantly reduced the residual stress in a chipped windscreen. This research was significant in providing objective and independent evidence that the Belron® repair process generates strong repairs. This research work and other research projects undertaken by Prof Donne have been used to support the Belron® advertising message worldwide which has led to motorists' increased awareness of windscreen repairs. Annual repair jobs have consequently increased by 26% over the period 2008 to 2012.

The Influence of WIRAD’s Design Policy Unit on the Design Innovation Policies of Wales, the UK and the European Union

Summary of the impact

The Design Policy Group has directly influenced the design innovation policies of the UK and EU Governments since 2008. We will evidence a clear link between the unit's research and the EU's 2010 `Innovation Union' policy and 2013 Action Plan, demonstrate that they provided important underpinnings for the Welsh Government's 2013 `Innovation Strategy for Wales' and that the group directly engaged in the UK's Design and Innovation Policy debate through invited membership of a House of Lord's Select Committee.
