Improving Radiocarbon Calibration

Summary of the impact

Statistical research undertaken at Sheffield has resulted in the provision of internationally-agreed calibration curves for radiocarbon dating that offer greater accuracy and higher resolution, and which (for the first time) span the full range of timelines over which radiocarbon dating is feasible. Since the amount of radioactive carbon in the Earth's atmosphere has not remained constant over time, anyone seeking to interpret a radiocarbon determination now calibrates it using one of these curves, which results in up to 50% reduction in calibrated date intervals over those previously obtainable. Non-academic users of these curves include staff in commercial radiocarbon laboratories, those working in commercial archaeology units, freelance archaeological consultants, palaeoenvironmental scientists working in governmental and intergovernmental bodies, private and public sector staff charged with the care of ancient buildings and environments, and freelance consultants who undertake radiocarbon dating in order to advise private customers, public sector companies and government agencies.

Old Scatness: the past providing a sustainable future

Revealing Avebury's prehistoric landscape

Development of an innovative data analysis tool to monitor groundwater pollution and environmental impact

Summary of the impact

With global demand for energy ever increasing, environmental impact has become a major priority for the oil industry. A collaboration between researchers at the University of Glasgow and Shell Global Solutions has developed GWSDAT (GroundWater Spatiotemporal Data Analysis Tool). This easy-to-use interactive software tool allows users to process and analyse groundwater pollution monitoring data efficiently, enabling Shell to respond quickly to detect and evaluate the effect of a leak or spill. Shell estimates that the savings gained by use of the monitoring tool exceed $10m over the last three years. GWSDAT is currently being used by around 200 consultants across many countries (including the UK, US, Australia and South Africa) with potentially significant impacts on the environment worldwide.

Pioneering geophysical prospecting to enhance sustainable approaches to the detection of the buried past

Summary of the impact

Bradford's pioneering research into geophysical prospecting has significantly changed the approach to heritage management in the UK and internationally. Our research has influenced the development of commercial survey instruments in this field as well as changing industry guidance/practice. The changes include increased use of more sustainable, non-invasive methods for archaeological investigation and the gathering of richer data about the buried past. Our guidelines for legacy archaeological data have created standards in the archiving of this valuable information resource for public re-use. The group's involvement with Time Team has enhanced public awareness of geophysical prospecting which is demonstrated in the increased use of these techniques by community groups.

UOA10-09: Driving clinical genetic testing and biotechnology development based on the International HapMap Project

Summary of the impact

The International HapMap project was a major international research collaboration to map the structure of common human genetic variation across populations from Europe, Asia and Africa. Mathematical Scientists from the University of Oxford played key roles in the development of statistical methods for the project, along with its overall design and management of the International HapMap Project.

Companies have used HapMap as the primary resource to design genome-wide microarrays to make novel discoveries in, for example, pharmacogenetic studies. The size of this market is estimated at $1.25 billion.

One novel discovery has led to a genetic test that is predictive of sustained viral suppression in patients treated for chronic hepatitis C. An estimated 2.7 to 3.9 million people are affected by HCV infection. This test is sold commercially by the company LabCorp and is a significant contributor to the company's testing volume. Finally, the project has been important in widening the public understanding of genetic variation.

CH6: Molecular and Isotope ‘Fingerprinting’ to Enhance Food Quality Assurance, Forensic Approaches and Wider Public Interest in Chemistry through Archaeology

Summary of the impact

Evershed and his research group in The School of Chemistry, University of Bristol, have pioneered a suite of novel molecular and stable isotope analytical chemical techniques for provenancing amorphous organic residues in archaeology, particularly for the elucidation of ancient diet and the origins of agriculture. Their on-going research continuously achieves impact worldwide at all levels. Impact has been actively enhanced via the involvement of Evershed and his entire team in hundreds of public engagement activities (art/science exhibitions and festivals, personal presentations, media interviews/articles/documentaries), school and college educational outreach activities (teacher/student conferences, items/articles in the educational literature and contributions to educational films/documentaries). Critically, their `fingerprinting' methods have found application in detecting food fraud in the vegetable oil trade, protecting the human population worldwide from consuming impure corn oil for ca. 15 years to the present day. Most poignantly, when called upon, their methods were pivotal in solving a murder case for the Metropolitan Police.

Community archaeology as 'citizen science': embedding research into a regional heritage agenda

Summary of the impact

The Caistor Roman Town Project has transformed understanding of one of East Anglia's most significant archaeological sites and has informed the management strategies of the site's principal stakeholders (South Norfolk Council, Norfolk County Council, Norfolk Museums Service and the Norfolk Archaeological Trust) in relation to presentation and interpretation. The project epitomises `citizen science', engendering sustained community involvement in archaeological research (c. 230 volunteers contributing over 35,000 hours), including the establishment of a charity that has enabled the volunteers to develop and support further community archaeology initiatives in the region. More than 15,000 visitors to excavations over 12 weeks and widespread coverage through internet, print news and television have broadened international understanding of archaeology and the site.

Synthetic weather sequences informing engineering design and supporting decisions about infrastructure

Summary of the impact

Research conducted in UCL's Department of Statistical Science has led to the development of a state-of-the-art software package for generating synthetic weather sequences, which has been widely adopted, both in the UK and abroad. The synthetic sequences are used by engineers and policymakers when assessing the effectiveness of potential mitigation and management strategies for weather-related hazards such as floods. In the UK, the software package is used for engineering design; for example, to inform the design of flood defences. In Australia it is being used to inform climate change adaptation strategies. Another significant impact is that UCL's analysis of rainfall trends in southwest Western Australia directly supported the decision of the state's Department of Water to approve the expansion of a seawater desalination plant at a cost of around AUS$450 million. The capacity of the plant was doubled to 100 billion litres per year in January 2013 and it now produces nearly one third of Perth's water supply.
