Sustainable productivity and growth through improved performance measurement and management practices in manufacturing enterprises

Summary of the impact

Performance measurement research at the University of Strathclyde has directly led to major economic and social improvements in over 170 companies, and indirectly to over 1000 companies through intermediaries such as Scottish Enterprise between 2008 and 2013. These benefits were achieved as a result of novel performance measurement and management practices and supporting ICT systems that integrated shop-floor, operational and strategic performance information in real time. The result was substantial productivity and growth benefits for international and UK companies, for example a 150% increase in turnover and 80% increase in employment at Highland Spring. The European wide FP7 FutureSME project (2009-2013) led by the Strathclyde team developed and delivered a €6M programme to improve the competitive capabilities of European Manufacturing SMEs. In 2012, the associated training programme developed at Strathclyde was awarded the European Training Programme of the Year Medal by the Polish Chamber of Commerce.

Improved productivity and growth through the use of new performance measurement systems

Summary of the impact

Research into Performance Measurement Systems conducted by the Strathclyde Institute for Operations Management (SIOM) between 1997 and 2013 has led to new knowledge which in turn has been applied in companies. These new insights have resulted in significant economic impacts for companies both large and small. The reach has been significant, with economic and social improvements in approximately 170 companies, and indirectly to over 1000 companies through intermediaries such as Scottish Enterprise and the Manufacturing Advisory Service. This case study focuses on impact generated since 2008 using companies of different sizes and from different sectors to illustrate the financial and other benefits realised from improved performance measurement and management systems. Some companies have achieved benefits through KTP projects, while other organisations focused on consultancy engagements. In addition, a large scale executive education programme developed around operations and performance improvement has allowed companies such as Babcock International Group to deploy the new knowledge about performance measurement systems throughout its international organisation, reaping financial and organisational benefits.

CREDIT MANAGEMENT RESEARCH CENTRE (CMRC): Improving credit management practice, influencing policy and enabling knowledge transfer

Summary of the impact

The ability of companies and organisations to pay and recover debts affects and reflects the financial health of UK PLC. Research by the Credit Management Research Centre (CMRC) led by Professor Nick Wilson has directly influenced UK government policy and regulation, leading to the development of tools and guidance to alleviate short and long-term financing problems for large and small businesses and organisations. The research has improved understanding of alternative forms of corporate finance for new ventures, growth and corporate restructuring. Improved knowledge has been gained on why some businesses grow and others fail in relation to financing, financial management and governance. Research has led to changes in the debt management systems and procedures in the public and private sector.

Summary of the impact

The body of research on responsible and sustainable business education has shaped the policies of key institutions working in the area of responsible business education, notably the Academy of Business in Society (ABIS) and the UN Principles for Responsible Management Education (UN PRME). It has also contributed to the guidance that UK higher education bodies give to Business Schools through the Higher Education Academy. ICCSR's research has also made available guidance and examples of best practice to these policy institutions through which business schools have been able to access evidence-based resources in their endeavour to develop effective practice.

Developing a Performance Management Methodology for Chinese Organisations in a Turbulent Environment

Summary of the impact

This case study describes the effects of a new performance management system, developed in China and adopted by organisations facing complex management challenges. To date, seven public and private sector organisations have successfully used the `3E' (Effectiveness, Efficacy, and Efficiency) system for tasks as varied as developing performance indicators, improving management communication and designing appraisal systems that work under conditions of rapid growth and change.

The participating organisations include the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Hunan University, Tonsan Adhesives Inc, Xingxiang Insurance, Sun-rivier local government, Liao-ling Plaze hotel and Hua-bao International Holdings. Their adoption of the 3E system has resulted in improved performance management within these organisations.

Influencing Co-Production in Management Research and Policy-making

Summary of the impact

Research undertaken by Starkey and colleagues has informed the development of a particular philosophy and practice of research. This has informed policy debates about the nature of effective management research for engaging with practice — now widely referred to as co-production — and led to new insights into the practice of policymaking in government. The research informed (1) the development of a new approach to policymaking adopted by the previous administration in work conducted for and with the Cabinet Office with senior civil servants and representation from the House of Lords; (2) collaborative work on the development of low carbon communities which was conducted with the Department of The Environment and Climate Change.

Maximising Human Resource Capabilities: the Centre for Performance-led HR.

Summary of the impact

Impact for the CPHR is derived from its collaborative partnership between their world-leading HR researchers and 20 primary sponsor organisations. Through this network the Centre stays abreast of the current issues facing HR directors. This co-production of knowledge generates performance-driven solutions that have benefit to the wider business community. These are distributed through high-impact white papers, journal articles and initiatives with the CIPD (the professional HR institution). Examples of organisational impact include a new strategy at McDonald's `Trust Based HR' and a 20% increase in job satisfaction of employees aged 60+ and the creation of an Executive Vice-President position at Shell.

‘Emotional Entrepreneurs’: Supporting Small-Scale Theatre Companies through the Development of Entrepreneurial Skills

Summary of the impact

Whilst little data exists about the numbers and finances of small-scale theatre companies (SSTC's) in the UK, they are a vital part of the theatre world whose national worth exceeds £2.5 billion annually (Theatre Futures, 2009). Yet, SSTCs attract little formal recognition (less than 2% receive Arts Council funding) and survival rates are correspondingly low (estimated at about 10%). In responding to clearly identified challenges of start-up and sustainability, Brunel research has benefited the theatre community by highlighting the need for a commercial agenda among theatre practitioners and by giving greater opportunity to develop an entrepreneurial `mind-set' through access to supportive networks. With particular reference to impact on creativity and culture, it has led to:

  • The establishment of Creative Producer's Collective, a producer-led network managed by Camden Theatres and supported by Camden Council which supports the development of new theatre companies
  • The creation of TheatreLab, a network that shares resources and skills of producers, writers, directors and actors
  • Performing Arts training outside Brunel that incorporates professional development material i.e. commercial skills and sector specific knowledge into undergraduate and postgraduate programmes

This has helped to promote sustained growth for a sector that has a critical impact on the theatre world more generally.

Implementation of a new Organisational Knowledge Management and e-Student System for use by Macedonia Higher Education.

Summary of the impact

This case study demonstrates how the application of GRBOM has been used to deliver a national e-student system. Key impacts include:

  • Providing an e-student CRM system accommodating 80% of the student population in Macedonia;
  • Savings of 237,014 student days with associated direct cost savings of 2.2million euros;
  • Administrative and academic savings of 1,058 days and savings of 43,660 euros;
  • Providing students with greater choice in the selection of their degree subject and modules;
  • Providing the first electronic communication infrastructure integrating students, academics and their universities;
  • Providing architecture and methodologies for CRM systems and an e-platform for adoption by Macedonia's Government in other sectors.
