Developing Collaborative Design Tools

Summary of the impact

Cruickshank's interdisciplinary research challenges the role of the professional designer and celebrates the potential of the citizen-designer. Insights from the research have developed a series of tools that facilitate design-creativity in the non-specialist. The research demonstrates that technology can be an enabler for the non-professional, impacting on design methods and their implementation. The process of developing the research has had a direct impact through significantly improving the consultation and design activities of the City and County Councils in Lancaster (with potential for scaling this up to other local authorities) and shaped the potential development of a 10-hectare city-centre green space over a 10-year period.

Multiple Perspective Problem Framing: the creation of Intellectual Property resulting in business growth through product development, jobs and sales

Summary of the impact

The Multiple Perspective Problem Framing (MPPF) model enables the complexity of the design process to be effectively addressed. Developed from research at Northumbria University, the MPPF has resulted in the development of commercially valuable Intellectual Property in exhibition, packaging and medical sectors. This case study focuses on one example in the exhibition sector, manufacturing and marketing of roller banners for exhibition by Eve Products Ltd. Since using the MPPF approach the company has created five new product ranges, increased turnover exceeding £1million and generated ten new jobs, with further benefits to its suppliers.

V&A Dundee-Design, Industry and the Cultural Economy

Summary of the impact

Professor Follett's research in craft, design and business, developed through the AHRC-funded Past-Present-Future-Craft-Practice project[2,7], has identified the need for a national design centre. This research has led to the development of the V&A Dundee concept, a £45m centre for design opening 2016/17.

Follett established Design-in-Action, Knowledge Exchange Hub delivering an innovation network, with 450 SMEs and six new products by September 2013, creating a sustainable investment portfolio and "a model of innovation for the sector" — quote by the AHRC.

Impacts of this research consist of:

  • the conceptualisation, fundraising and establishment of a major new cultural centre for design;
  • increased public engagement with design;
  • innovative forms of assistance to SMEs.

Design and Knowledge Transfer Partnership collaborations

Summary of the impact

This case study describes the impact of research in Design Management and Product Design carried out by the Design Research Group at the University of Northampton in embedding design competencies in a number of British companies, particularly in the Northampton region through inter-related, collaborative Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs). This case study demonstrates how the research in Product Design and Design Management has benefited companies economically in adding value to the UK economy, and as a consequence of one particular KTP, significantly improving quality of life.

The Influence of WIRAD’s Design Policy Unit on the Design Innovation Policies of Wales, the UK and the European Union

Summary of the impact

The Design Policy Group has directly influenced the design innovation policies of the UK and EU Governments since 2008. We will evidence a clear link between the unit's research and the EU's 2010 `Innovation Union' policy and 2013 Action Plan, demonstrate that they provided important underpinnings for the Welsh Government's 2013 `Innovation Strategy for Wales' and that the group directly engaged in the UK's Design and Innovation Policy debate through invited membership of a House of Lord's Select Committee.

Improving strategic design management competence in small and medium sized companies through action and case-study research

Summary of the impact

Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD) has researched the extent and effectiveness of design management in companies for over 15 years. The research has combined an academic analysis with a practice based approach where findings have been implemented through a succession of industry-facing, large-scale, externally funded projects.

Through this sustained activity, design tools, methods and support strategies have been developed, delivered, tested and disseminated internationally. Additionally, the experiences are fed back into the continuing research that underpins the practical activity.

Since 2008, BIAD's business-facing projects have:

  • assisted over 300 companies (compared with 70+ in 2003-2008);
  • established 21 new businesses;
  • built a network of 400 companies;
  • secured over £3m of grant funding; and
  • been instrumental in shifting company culture from cost-driven to value-added.

Managing innovation

Summary of the impact

Research undertaken at the Centre for Research in Innovation Management (CENTRIM) has demonstrated the company characteristics that contribute to successful innovation. The research provided the core body of knowledge used by the Managing Innovation training programme that has been used by more than 5,000 managers worldwide. The programme presents the findings of research in powerful, accessible and usable ways. It has been adopted by some of the world's most innovative companies, including Medtronic, Cisco Systems and Abbott Laboratories, to stimulate personal development and organisational change. A Managing Innovation train-the-trainer programme has been developed that has provided intensive development for certified trainers and facilitated the roll-out of this programme through Australia, Brazil, Chile, Denmark, Poland, Mexico, Tanzania, USA and Venezuela.

The user- centred management of innovation in two SMEs

Summary of the impact

Green and Lilley's research on the management of innovation within creative organisations, with a specific focus on people-centred and socio-technical systems design of digital technology, has benefitted two companies significantly through two knowledge-transfer partnerships. One company — Bulb - more than doubled its staff numbers from 8 to 18 and increased turnover from £700,000 to £1.2 million. This research contributed to the basis for a new company — CrowdLab - now worth £1.5 million. Both companies have been short-listed for a number of awards, one recently winning the 2013 Leicester Mercury Innovative Company category. The School has embraced the University's Knowledge Exchange provision to respond effectively to the Government's economic development agenda which has placed HEIs `centre stage' to deliver private-sector led innovation and economic recovery.

Business Model Innovation and Product Innovation

Summary of the impact

Costas Markides undertook several studies on two broad topics related to corporate innovation: (a) business model innovation; and (b) radical product innovation. His work has been published in top academic and practitioner journals, and has been broadly disseminated in several best-selling books. His ideas and findings have made an impact in several large multinational companies who have adopted his ideas in their practices; his research has also had an impact through executive education and keynote speeches. His work on innovation has led to his membership of the Thinkers 50 management guru list every time the list has been compiled since 2005.
