This case study details the impact of research on the biomechanics of ageing, and the translation of novel methods developed in this research into clinical applications for Parkinson's disease. Our work, commissioned by and developed with English National Ballet (ENB), has raised the profile of dance as a novel health intervention, promoting the health of patients and facilitating the public services of ENB. The reach of our impact is international, and includes a wide range of beneficiaries including Parkinson's patients, dance and health professionals, the general public, ENB and other dance organisations. The significance of our work is indicated by the profound differences it has made to the beneficiaries, awards that the project has received, and the substantial press coverage it has attracted.
The public sector is facing unprecedented demands to improve the quality of services with reduced budgets. The `CLEAR IDEAS' (CI) innovation development model has been used by public sector organisations since October 2010 to enhance their innovativeness in dealing with these challenges. Publications analysing political mobilisation during the English revolution, widely disseminated through sales of the book God's Fury, England's Fire, reviews, and in public engagement activities, have shaped public understandings of how popular support for radical politics can be mobilised. The book's central arguments have made a significant contribution to contemporary political and social debates and have shaped the work of programme makers and other creative artists. The widespread use of the book in teaching in higher education and at A Level in the UK and internationally means that it has played a central role in shaping student understandings of this key period of English history.
Leyshon and French's research on the geography of UK bank and building society branch closures influenced the decision by the Financial Inclusion Taskforce to target 25 under-served local authority areas for additional support from the government's £42m Growth Fund between 2008 and 2011. The Growth Fund, which is targeted at Credit Unions, Community Development Financial Institutions and other, not-for-profit `third sector' lenders, enables financially excluded households to access credit on more affordable terms.
Through accessible local history resources co-produced by academics and community volunteers, Riden has helped to open up previously academic-focused research to new, local audiences. He has empowered amateur historians through new research skills to take an active role in documenting and thereby conserving their communities' histories (this has included volunteers publishing their own research). He has contributed to an improved quality of visitor experience at a local heritage organisation through providing new knowledge and confidence to volunteer guides. Through translating the co-produced resources for use in primary and secondary schools, he has given children new research skills which they have then used to develop new understanding of their community's history.
This case study shows how high quality research into the digital newsroom and means of interacting effectively with the site users of Johnston Press (JP) publications, together with the interactions of the researcher involved (Jane Singer) with JP journalists, company trainers and senior executives, had a significant effect on the company's ability to respond effectively to some of the key changes that have swept through the news industry as a result of the digital revolution. Singer's research and knowledge exchange role with JP supported the decision-making and change-management processes, helping the company reposition itself in a multi-platform environment [text removed for publication].
Research into primary care insomnia by the Community and Health Research Unit (CaHRU) has led to broad improvements in healthcare provision for insomnia, improved patient quality of life, informed national/international policy and practice in insomnia care and impacted directly on health professional practice and insomnia sufferers, initially in Lincolnshire spreading across the UK and internationally from 2008 to 2011. Direct effects on practice include changes in sleep management and reduced hypnotic prescribing through seminars, workshops, conferences and e-learning developed by the team; inclusion in UK policy, practitioner information, training materials and guidance on hypnotics has led to greater professional and public awareness of sleep management internationally.
Peter Gaunt's extensive research explores local and national histories of Oliver Cromwell, one of Britain's most important national figures. While Cromwell tends to be remembered in a national context, the English civil war itself also had a dramatic effect on the people and landscapes of England and Wales as a whole. Communities were torn asunder, buildings destroyed and some 200,000 people lost their lives. But often little of this is known at a local level, so, through a range of activities, Gaunt has shared his findings with the most diverse of audiences, enabling people to rethink and reassess Cromwell and the Civil War's local impact in a new focused way.
