A second-line option for conscious sedation of children for dental procedures

Summary of the impact

Anxiety before dental procedures is common in children, and is usually managed by conscious sedation of the patient. Previously, nitrous oxide inhalation was the only method widely used in primary care, so patients who could not be thus sedated were referred for general anaesthesia. In 2010, NICE published the first national guideline on medical sedation, which states that administration of midazolam should be considered alongside the standard technique of nitrous oxide inhalation for sedation of children. That recommendation is based on robust evidence, the majority of which came from a series of randomised controlled clinical trials carried out by researchers at Newcastle University. Midazolam is now deployed as a second-line sedation option across the UK.

Summary of the impact

The Farndale group have identified fragments of collagen, synthesised and assembled in active, triple-helical conformation, for use as ligands to manipulate platelet function. As a result of this work, the fragment Collagen-Related Peptide (CRP) is included in British Committee for Standards in Haematology guidelines as a platelet agonist for the diagnosis of platelet defects. The group has also synthesised triple-helical collagen peptide libraries and used them to map binding of cells or proteins to collagen more widely. The peptides are made and distributed by the Farndale lab, generating income through sales and licencing, and are used internationally by companies and hospitals to develop diagnostics and for high-throughput drug discovery. Prof Farndale also acts as a consultant for companies developing diagnostics.

Mathematical Foundations of Flow Assurance Issues in the Petroleum Industry

Summary of the impact

This case study relates to research supported under contract by Statoil AS, one of the world's largest oil and gas companies, and is focused on two major issues of significance to that industry, namely, the mathematical modelling and analysis of (a) hydraulic two-layer gas/liquid flow in pipe lines and (b) wax formation in the interior walls of pipe lines transporting heated oil. These projects arose out of contacts between senior research staff at the Statoil Research Centre and the Nonlinear Waves group in the School of Mathematics. The theoretical research undertaken was designed to complement the major experimental programmes developed at the Statoil Research Centre and was performed in collaboration with scientists there. The work has provided Statoil with a reliable theoretical framework to contextualise and enable comparison with experimental results and to inform the design of future experimental programmes. In the larger context, the research has played a key role in advancing the capability of Statoil to design and implement more economical, energy efficient, and environmentally safe strategies for gas/oil delivery via extended pipeline networks. Statoil have stated that the benefit of access to robust flow models in the North Sea context is rapidly approaching an economic value of many billions of Norwegian kroner.
