A world first in flight safety: University of Portsmouth academics bring avionic data analysis into the 21st century

Summary of the impact

A Portsmouth team has helped revolutionise how flight data from aircraft flight recorders is being analysed. This has improved the corporate performance of a leading UK company in a globally competitive market by helping it expand its business in the UK and to subsequently compete in the dynamic North American market. Historically, data was manually evaluated on a flight by flight basis. Research by the Portsmouth team means such data can now be analysed automatically by artificial intelligence (AI), saving significant man-hours, and allowing the company to diversify domestically into a related market and to expand internationally. The techniques developed were subsequently applied in a new market, enabling the new corporate partner to realise savings estimated at £100,000 p.a.

Data-driven Decision Support

Summary of the impact

Many organisations rely on increasingly large and complex datasets to inform operational decision- making. To assist decision-makers when decisions are data-driven, computational tools are needed that present reliable summary information and suggest options allied to the key objectives of decision-making. Research at RGU has developed novel learning and optimisation algorithms driven by multifactorial data and implemented this in commercial decision-support software. The research has had economic impact by providing products to be sold: drilling rig selection tool (ODS-Petrodata Ltd.) and subsea hydraulics diagnostic tool (Viper Subsea Ltd.). Further economic impact comes from operations management software developed for British Telecom.

Data maps with applications to medical diagnostics and monitoring

Advanced technologies for data visualisation and data mining, developed in the Unit in collaboration with national and international teams, are widely applied for development of medical services. In particular, a system for canine lymphoma diagnosis and monitoring developed with [text removed for publication] has now been successfully tested using clinical data from several veterinary clinics. The risk maps produced by our technology provide early diagnosis of lymphoma several weeks before the clinical symptoms develop. Institute Curie (Paris), applies this data mapping technique and the software that has been developed jointly with Leicester in clinical projects.

Optimising Spacecraft Design for A World-leading Space Agency

Summary of the impact

Through close collaboration with scientists at the European Space Agency (ESA), research at the University of Southampton has developed new algorithms and an associated software tool that have contributed to more efficient spacecraft design. Now a standard component of the ESA's design technology, the tools have doubled the speed in which crucial design processes can be completed, resulting in increased efficiency over the REF period of 20 person-years — equivalent to €1 million in monetary terms — and maintaining the ESA's manufacturing competitiveness. The success of this work led to a €480,000 EU grant to adapt the tools for the avionics industry as part of efforts to meet ambitious environmental targets under the EU Clean Sky Initiative.

Case Study 4: Novel optimisation significantly reduces costs, increases turnover and reduces emissions

Optimisation tools developed in the UoA have significantly advanced the ability to find the best designs for complex systems in cases where these were previously unobtainable. These optimisation tools have been implemented in several companies to shorten design times, reduce costs and reduce CO2 emissions. This has brought about new multi-million pound revenues, long-term contracts, increased employment and contribution to sustainability targets.

Improved Insurance Products for the Multinational Insurance Industry

Summary of the impact

Our research has been applied directly by Aviva plc. to develop improved products in the general insurance market (e.g. household and car) and in the more specialised area of enhanced pension annuities. As a result, Aviva has become more competitive in these markets and customers are enjoying better value for money. In the case of enhanced annuities, the benefits are in the form of higher pension income for those accurately identified as facing shortened life expectancies. Aviva is the largest insurance company in the UK and the sixth largest in the world.

Spectral theory to improve the accuracy of vibrational energy predictions in complex structures such as cars, aeroplanes and buildings

Summary of the impact

Designs for complex structures like cars, aeroplanes and modern buildings suffer from unpredictable vibrations that lead to anything from irritating noises to dangerous structural failures. Predicting the distribution of vibrational energy in large coupled systems is an important and challenging task of major interest to industry. Until recently there was no reliable method to predict vibrations at the important mid-to-high frequency ranges.

There is a need to gain accurate predictions of vibrations at the design stage. However, previous techniques developed in the context of Quantum Chaos are too cumbersome to be used in a fast-moving commercial design setting. Bandtlow has used his expertise to develop a novel method that computes a very close approximation to these predictions but in a reasonable time. Bandtlow's method of constructing an efficient mathematical model for spectral vibrations has informed inuTech's latest product and led to enhanced performance of automobiles and aircraft.

HiP-HOPS: A novel method and tool for dependability analysis and optimisation of systems

Summary of the impact

The University of Hull has pioneered a novel method and tool for dependability analysis and optimisation of critical engineering systems known as Hierarchically Performed Hazard Origin and Propagation Studies (HiP-HOPS).

a) HiP-HOPS (http:\\hip-hops.eu) has been successfully commercialised in conjunction with software houses ITI GmbH (Germany) and ALL4TEC (France). Over 30 licences for the tool have been sold since 2011 with total income for all partners estimated at £300,000.

b) The method and tool have been taken up by large organisations including Volvo, Toyota, Honda, Fiat, Continental, Germanischer Lloyd, Embraer and Honeywell.

c) HiP-HOPS has contributed to the specification of EAST-ADL, an emerging design language developed as an automotive industry standard, confirming industrial reach and acceptability.

d) The Dependable Systems research group is pursuing impact on the new automotive safety standard ISO-262626 and have contributed to setting up the new IFAC DCDS workshop a key forum for disseminating research on dependability to industry.

National Gas Demand Forecasting

Summary of the impact

This impact case is based on economic impact through improved forecasting technology. It shows how research in pattern recognition by Professor Henry Wu at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science led to significantly improved accuracy of daily national gas demand forecasting by National Grid plc. The underpinning research on predicting non-linear time series began around 2002 and the resulting new prediction methodology is applied on a daily basis by National Grid plc since December 2011. The main beneficiaries from the improved accuracy (by 0.5 to 1 million cubic meters per day) are UK gas shippers, who by conservative estimates save approximately £3.5M per year. Savings made by gas shippers benefit the whole economy since they reduce the energy bills of end users.

SpendInsight

Summary of the impact

Bishop and Danicic contributed to the development of novel spend analysis software. Launched in 2011 as a commercial service by KTP industrial partners @UK PLC, SpendInsight has been used by over 380 organisations, including Basingstoke and North Hampshire NHS Foundation Trust, which, alone, cut procurement spend by £300,000 via savings identified using SpendInsight. An analysis produced by SpendInsight for the National Audit Office identified gross inefficiencies in NHS procurement, yielding potential annual overall savings of at least £500 million. The findings of this report were discussed in parliament and changes to NHS purchasing policy were recommended as a result.
