Summary of the impact

Mathematical models recently developed in York have improved our understanding of the dynamics of marine ecosystems. They underpin paradigm-changing proposals to orient fisheries policy towards a "balanced harvest" and away from the traditional selective harvesting of species and sizes. These proposals have:

  • influenced, and are now being actively pursued by, international NGOs involved in shaping the future direction of fisheries policy worldwide;
  • informed and stimulated debate among policy makers in the EU Parliament and elsewhere;
  • been incorporated into long range planning for Norwegian fishery management.

Air Power Theory and History

Summary of the impact

Professor Richard Overy's research on key issues of air power history and theory has influenced how both UK and International air forces consider key areas of air power history and their application to current issues of air power doctrine and development. This has been achieved by contributing to the air forces continuing professional development through seminars and lectures to service audiences, participation in RAF history teaching evaluation, publication of key texts on air power issues used in service academies and regular engagement with academic and non-academic audiences on air power history.

Using History to inform Armed Forces policy and training

Summary of the impact

Research by staff in the Centre for War Studies at the University of Birmingham, has informed continuing professional development (CPD) and training in the Armed Forces in the UK and overseas. This includes the design and delivery of training, study tours and materials for chaplains and NATO senior officers. Additionally academics have facilitated access to research to stimulate policy debate in the Armed Forces through invited presentations to professional conferences, and nationally and internationally by informing the content of Select Committee expert evidence.

Using Mathematical Modelling to Improve Cancer Treatment

Summary of the impact

A dedicated specialist mathematical modelling unit in the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, FL, USA, was set up — the Integrated Mathematical Oncology Unit (IMO) — through the movement of three staff with expertise in cancer modelling from the UoA's Mathematical Biology (MB) research group. Clinical practice has been changed and patient treatment improved through the work of IMO.

Modelling by members of the MB research group and the move of a former PDRA led to Cyclacel Ltd. and AstraZeneca obtaining a better understanding of the link between drug-dose and drug-efficacy in a class of cell-cycle-specific anti-tumour drugs called Aurora kinase inhibitors and has led to enhanced business performance.
