Summary of the impact

This case study focuses on the impact of research carried out at the University of Cambridge into the history of evolution by Professor James Secord and co-workers, notably the impact of two research programmes: the Darwin Correspondence Project and Darwin Online. These projects have contributed to a substantial reorientation of public discourse on the history of evolution. The impact has been achieved through web resources; museum and library exhibitions; teaching materials for schools and universities; and radio and television programmes. These outputs have encouraged public understanding of the range of contributors to science, including women; an awareness of the diversity of positions in the evolutionary debate; and an appreciation of the complex relations between evolutionary science and faith. The projects have shown that the highest achievements of scholarship can be made freely accessible to a global audience.

Dielectric Materials for HVAC and HVDC Electrical Power Transmission Components (Nanocomposite Insulating Materials)

Summary of the impact

Electrical power companies are tasked with operating a highly reliable and robust power system. Electrical power outages (blackouts) have serious consequences for the companies concerned as well as society. The health of electrical insulating materials is critical for the reliability of these systems as it often determines equipment lifetime.

Leicester was the first to demonstrate experimentally that polymer based nanocomposite materials could increase the service life and reliability of electrical insulation as used in high voltage power transmission systems. Its research has also led to the development of measurement techniques to assess the health and the extent of thermal ageing of HV power cables.

National Grid has used Leicester's research findings to manage and monitor its electricity transmission equipment, with resulting impacts on its safety, efficiency and financial economy. Borealis, a major international supplier of insulating materials has used the research to solve manufacturing problems and to set up test facilities for medium voltage cables. A Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Alstom Grid has led to the the establishment of a £1M commercial size HVDC cable test facility which has attracted £0.5M investment from cable manufacturers worldwide.

2. Herculean Labours: enriching the public understanding of our classical mythological heritage

Summary of the impact

Research 2005-12 has opened up new perspectives on Herakles-Hercules, tracing links between the ancient hero and his post-classical incarnations, and laying the foundations for further study of Hercules' long-lasting cross-cultural significance. The impact has three strands:

  • on individual public users — enriching lives via novel interpretations of the quintessential ancient Greek hero;
  • on the public engagement practice of Leeds City Museum 2011-13;
  • on the planning process for the 2015-16 programme of a range of museums in the UK, continental Europe and beyond which are to host an innovative type of touring exhibition.

Improving the as-constructed energy performance of dwellings through building forensics

Summary of the impact

The group's forensic research into housing energy and carbon performance has established the existence of "performance gap" between designed energy performance and that achieved in completed dwellings. This seminal work has led to revisions in Building Regulations, shaped Government policy on zero carbon housing standards and is enabling the house building industry, including its supply chain, to re-evaluate technology and processes. Considerable benefit will flow from government and industry actions to close the gap, leading to the realisation of significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, improved processes & technology, improved skills & knowledge, lower energy bills and more comfortable homes.

Adapting to the impact of climate change on Birmingham's urban heat island

Summary of the impact

The government expects local councils to play a vital role in making sure the UK is prepared for climate change. Birmingham City Council, the largest local authority in the UK, has worked in partnership with University of Birmingham (UoB) researchers in the BUCCANEER project (Birmingham Urban Climate Change Adaptation with Neighbourhood Estimates of Environmental Risk). The city has drawn extensively on the tool developed from BUCCANEER to inform their approach to adapting city systems to the increased likelihood of extreme temperatures in the future. This is a particular risk to cities like Birmingham where the projected higher overall temperatures in the UK as a result of climate change would exacerbate the existing urban heat island effect and produce potentially-damaging consequences for inner city areas. The project has had public policy impact by informing the approach taken by the City's influential Green Commission and by direct inclusion in the City Council's new development guidance. Temperature change and the urban heat island have now become mandatory factors to be considered for all developments requiring permission and guidance explicitly points developers towards BUCCANEER as the tool with which to consider this factor. A second public policy impact derives from the value of the tool for health planning: a significant proportion of the inner-city population is particularly vulnerable to extreme temperatures through age or ill-health and live where the heat island effect is shown to be largest. This aspect is now being increasingly employed by Public Health analysts and managers in the City.

Advanced monitoring technology for high voltage equipment creates economic impact through substantial UK export business

Summary of the impact

Innovative research at Strathclyde University, embodied in its spinout Diagnostic Monitoring Systems (DMS) Ltd, has enabled the Glasgow-based company to become the premier supplier of ultra-high frequency (UHF) systems for detecting harmful partial discharge (PD) activity in high-value gas insulated substations and power transformers. Annual sales rose from £6.7M in 2008 to £11M in 2012, and its staff doubled to 56 employees. DMS' equipment is utilised in 27 countries, with total exports over 2008 - 2013 exceeding £45M. A sustained partnership with Strathclyde has yielded new sensor technologies and secured mainstream international recognition for UHF PD detection techniques, which are being incorporated within a new IEC standard. Economic value of Strathclyde's UHF technology was further emphasised in 2009 when DMS was acquired by Qualitrol, part of the US $46B Danaher Corp that owns numerous global engineering brands including Tektronix, Fluke, Leica Microsystems and Gilbarco Veeder-Root.

Restoring 'Fresh Expressions' to the Parish as the Focus of Mission in the Church of England

Summary of the impact

Research on ecclesiology undertaken by Revd Dr Alison Milbank:

  • Has informed the theology, policy and practice of mission in the Church of England by challenging the theological basis of the dominant Fresh Expressions movement and offering a new model based on mediation;
  • Has engaged cathedral visitors and church members in new ways of experiencing religious objects via video and barcodes;
  • Has informed and influenced curricula and syllabi in Anglican ordination training on mission and ecclesiology.
  • Has exceeded its target audience of the Church of England, being discussed by other churches in the UK and worldwide.

Sustainable energy research applications and solutions

Summary of the impact

This case study describes interdisciplinary impacts developed from research of the Sustainable Energy theme. They examine conversion of energy from alternative sources; from power generation using pyrolysis or biomass burners to energy harvesting of waste heat from electronic components. In all cases the aim is clear: to develop systems that make sustainable energy production a reality. This has important impacts in advancing efficiency and reliability in renewable energy technologies. Importantly, through a number of externally funded projects, this group's members have directly influenced local, national and international companies and governmental bodies. In some cases influencing decisions and having direct impact on efficiency, value from investment and even on balance sheets. In summary, they have conducted numerous energy audits, produced a minimum of 6 best practice case studies, influenced the renewable strategies of at least 52 countries, regions or industries and are recognised as the centre for biomass fuel quality assessment.

The Textile Stories Project

Summary of the impact

Deborah Wynne's research into nineteenth-century literature's engagement with material culture is internationally recognised. Her latest work on textiles underpins the Textile Stories Project, a celebration of the rich heritages of fabric, fashion and costume, particularly in literary contexts. The project is designed to appeal to members of the public with an interest in textiles, crafts, fashion, and the costume drama and has influenced public understanding of the significance of nineteenth- century literature. By demonstrating the role of textiles in literary contexts, the project also creates opportunities for general readers to enhance their understanding of, and pleasure in, the literary culture and screen adaptations.
