Summary of the impact

This new resource is the world's first to consider the historiography surrounding the Beatles and Merseybeat. The work is an intrinsic part of the framework of Liverpool's Beatles-related tourism industry. Is Shakespeare Good for Us?

Summary of the impact

This case study looks at the research of Dr William Rossiter, who was a Senior Lecturer in English Literature, specializing in late medieval and early modern literature. The mandatory study of Shakespeare at GCSE and A-level presupposes a moral virtue inherent in studying Shakespeare's works, and Dr Rossiter sought to establish whether this moral virtue exists and to identify what it consists of. For the project called `Shakespeare for Schools', he gave a series of lectures and workshops on the topic in 2013, primarily but not exclusively aimed at school students. Local A-level students from a varied demographic were invited to attend a lecture and workshop on Shakespeare's comedies, tragedies or sonnets, depending on the texts they were studying, followed by a further seminar three months later, with a view to enhancing their knowledge of the early modern ethical principles that underpin those texts. The general public were also invited to a lecture on the themes of time and quality of life in Shakespeare's sonnets delivered on the anniversary of his birth/death (23 April 2013), as part of the opening night of Liverpool City Council's In Other Words literary festival. The impact of the events lies in the effect of the university-level analysis of Shakespeare's works and the moral code they foster, or are seen to foster, upon groups approaching Shakespeare from outside of academia. This impact initiative sought to (a) emphasize the accessibility of Shakespeare and early modern studies, (b) identify the ways in which Shakespearean ethics affect everyday ethical decisions, (c) interrogate the mandatory teaching of Shakespeare in UK schools, wherein his works are taught as part of the GCSE English syllabus and at A-level, and (d) encourage local students to apply to university by introducing them to university-level research.

MAGIC2VIP: Making Accessible Graphic Information Context to Visually Impaired People

Summary of the impact

This project has made a considerable impact on the teaching of Geometry to school pupils with visual impairment thus ultimately enhancing their teaching and learning experience and quality of life (pupils and teachers from schools in remote villages in the states of Tamil Nadu; Andhra Pradesh; and Kerala in India). The Tactile Graphic Tool (TGT) designed as part of this project is a device allowing hand exploratory movement in making tactile diagrams of graphical and geometrical constructions and then portable digital device (e.g. DigiMemo A402 or a tablet PC) is used to make these accessible as digital pictures through the interface of a computer. The benefits of the tools developed have been in assisting people with visual impairment to overcome the challenge of accessing graphic information contents in mathematics, including graphs, geometry and statistical representations. In particular, the case study's impact represents a practical demonstration of the potential of technology-assisted learning for visually impaired students and is aimed at enhancing their educational and workplace opportunities, as well as access to popular media.

`Performing Migration' impact case study includes a number of workshops, performances, artist talks and events undertaken and/or organized by Dr. Lena Simic with contributions from Dr. Gary Anderson, Dr. Niamh Malone and Ms Carmel Cleary. The case study is embedded in the community work within Liverpool, but its outreach is also transnational. This case study's impact lies in enriching cultural life and influencing public discourse around the themes of citizenship, belonging and migration. This work is furthermore activist and political — financial resources have been used from institutions (Arts Council England and Liverpool Hope University) to channel the funds and better the lives of the migrants.

Psychology of Terrorism and Politically Motivated Violence

Summary of the impact

Terrorism and political violence are one of the most significant threats facing contemporary society. Building on over twenty years of research into the political situation in Northern Ireland, the research team have explored the impact political violence has on individuals and communities; in particular, they have explored the antecedent factors which lead to people choosing to engage and disengage in politically motivated violence, commonly termed `terrorism'. This knowledge has been utilised to inform policy and improve military practice across various branches of the UK government, UK and overseas military services, police and security services, NATO and a number of faith and NGO groups.

Reclaiming cultural memories of the Tamils in European missionary writings

Summary of the impact

The research, on early 18th century South India through the writings of German missionary scholars, has expanded knowledge of the Tamil people, languages and cultures; identified more than 160 Tamil and Telugu texts engraved on palm leaves; and recovered numerous paper manuscripts that were considered lost. The work on manuscript recovery has contributed to the professional practice and discourse of professional archivists and librarians and, through examining these manuscripts in Tamil, German, Latin, Portuguese, and English, a new picture about the Tamil emerges. This has important implications for Tamil cultural identity, heritage and pride, currently a matter of social and political emphasis in the Indian public sphere. It also contributes to government initiatives for the revival and celebration of the Tamil language.

Sand Dune and Shingle Network: linking science and management

Summary of the impact

Coastal dunes are one of the most threatened habitats in Europe, and are in need of urgent conservation. North West Europe is one of the most important areas for vegetated shingle worldwide, and the UK is especially important. The Sand Dune and Shingle Network has helped to change the understanding, policies and practices relating to these habitats in the UK, and in Europe through the creation of knowledge exchange opportunities in a diverse stakeholder environment, by working with and for NGOs. This allows statutory conservation agencies to deliver research, consultancy and policy guidance.

Segmentation and Watermarking of Peripheral Blood Smear Images

Summary of the impact

The key impact of this project, in the form of `proof of concept', has been by influencing the practice of medical professionals (haematologists) at the Transfusion Medicine & Immunohematology section (in the hospital wing) of the Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore (India). This has been achieved by developing and implementing system software for segmenting (and watermarking) of the nuclei of the White Blood Cells (WBCs) of peripheral blood smear images to overcome the challenge of identifying various pathological conditions. Segmentation of medical images is a highly challenging process, especially when dealing with blood smear images, which are known to have a very complex cell structure. The project has led to a significant improvement in the work process of haematologists at CMC's hospital wing where the output of this research (software system pilot) is being used. This has had an impact on the way smear slides are digitised, archived, and includes the segmentation, analysis, and watermarking of medical images at CMC. Christian Medical College (CMC) and Hospital at Vellore is an educational and pioneering research institute and a tertiary care hospital (which is the CMC's hospital wing), located at Tamil Nadu in Southern India.

Change in practice for surgical teams: Major surgery for cancerous tumour removal

Summary of the impact

This case study refers to a change in practice for surgical teams when considering major surgery for the removal cancerous tumours. Such procedures carry significant risk of death within 30-days and reliance on intensive care in the post-operation period. Our research demonstrated that a significant predictor of mortality was physical fitness prior to undertaking chemotherapy. Hence exercise testing is now used in a systematic manner in order to objectively assess risk prior to chemotherapy and surgery
