Detecting and preventing financial abuse of older adults: An examination of decision-making by professionals in health, social care, health and banking

Summary of the impact

Brunel research on understanding how social care, health, and finance professionals detect and prevent elder financial abuse has (1) raised national and international awareness of elder financial abuse, (2) increased international collaborative work between stakeholders and (3) improved professional decision-making capacity in relation to the detection and prevention of elder financial abuse. The research enabled the development and testing of a web-based training resource to improve workforce decision-making capacity. The training resource has been made freely available and has been advocated for continuing professional development (CPD) by several organisations including AgeUK, as the Building Societies Association and the College of Occupational Therapists.

Summary of the impact

This case study presents the impact of the Health and Temperature Research Group (HTRG) at Sheffield Hallam University, led by Professor Tod. The group generates novel, collaborative, translational, interdisciplinary (e.g. health, housing and environment, energy and welfare) research with a focus on cold related ill health. The research impact is illustrated here by The Keeping Warm in Later Life Project (KWILLT). KWILLT findings provide a unique understanding of the complex environment and multiple factors influencing older people keeping warm and well in winter. Beneficiaries include NHS, local and national policy makers, and practice organisations.

Autonomy and the Assessment of Mental Capacity

Summary of the impact

In 2008 the Philosophy Department decided to organise its impact strategy around the research activities of the Essex Autonomy Project (EAP). EAP research has been conducted in two distinct strands with different research outputs and impacts. This case study summarises the impact of our interdisciplinary research on the legal/psychiatric concept of `mental capacity.' Through the EAP practitioner network, Summer School, and on-site workforce training programme, that research is now informing and changing the assessment of capacity undertaken by frontline medical professionals and social workers acting under the 2005 Mental Capacity Act.

The Whole Systems Demonstrator Study (WSD) – an evaluation of tele-assistive devices in health and social care systems, to guide the roll-out of telecare and telehealth systems in the UK Health and Social Care services.

Summary of the impact

The Whole System Demonstrator (WSD) research programme is a project funded by Policy Research Programme Department of Health and led by academic staff at City University London which investigates how technology can help people manage their health and safety while maintaining their independence. The WSD evaluation provides scientific evidence that has influenced and continues to influence public policy debate in the UK and internationally. It has shaped UK Department of Health policy and strategies regarding deployment of tele-assistive devices to meet the growing health and social care demands in a changing population. And it is helping to shape manufacturers' design of services with the user in mind and how health and social care providers offer tele-assistive services.
