Two leading manufacturers of clothing for outdoor activities ([text removed for publication]) have produced a new range of functional clothing based on research at Ulster on wearable technologies for the active ageing. The new age-appropriate outdoor garments incorporate wearable technologies that enable self-monitoring of physiological parameters (heart rate, respiration rate) and activity levels (step-counts, distance walked) with optimal placement of sensors to improve signal-to-noise ratio. World leading research from the Bradford Dementia Group (BDG) has transformed policy and practice in dementia care by demonstrating the need to understand the experience and perspective of people living with dementia in order to ensure their well-being. It has provided a model of dementia care, Person-Centred Care (PCC), and an observational measure and practice development methodology, Dementia Care Mapping (DCM). In England, PCC and DCM are integral to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines and DCM is endorsed by the National Audit Office. Regulators use our DCM derivative, the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI) to audit care. Our research has wide international reach. Since 2008, 3616 practitioners have been trained in DCM in the UK and a further 3189 internationally.
[text removed for publication], a developer of high-precision medical devices, have produced a new data annotation tool ([text removed for publication]) based on research in CSRI on data storage formats and activity recognition for applications within smart home environments. Within [text removed for publication] stereo-based cameras record activities in a specified environment (e.g. kitchen) which are then annotated using user-based pre-configured activity labels (e.g. prepare meal, wash dishes). [text removed for publication] is currently used by [text removed for publication] users and has yielded additional sales worth [text removed for publication]. [text removed for publication] have employed [text removed for publication] additional technical development staff to extend [text removed for publication] functionality, and through an MoU [text removed for publication] now supports automated annotation based on CSRI's research on activity recognition.
Research carried out at the University of Southampton has led to the development of a new tool for detecting and managing malnutrition. The Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) has been rolled out to more than 80% of hospitals and care homes in England and 98% in Scotland, is part of national health policy in Finland and the Netherlands, and has attracted interest internationally. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence bases its current quality standard for nutritional support in adults on the MUST framework; only two NICE guidelines have saved the NHS more money. MUST has become an integral part of the UK's health policy framework, embedded in routine clinical care and supported by bodies responsible for clinical and care excellence. It is central to learning programmes on managing malnutrition.

Cranfield's research has also contributed to a major new Chemring hardware product called the Centurion launcher, by informing the development of the software algorithms to control the launcher in operation.
Newcastle research on dementia contributed two aspects that helped to shape high-level policy: first that prevalence of the condition was higher than previously suspected, with implications for care of the ageing UK population. Secondly, that patients often experienced long delays before a diagnosis of dementia was given, leading to distress both for patients and their families. This research informed policy documents such as the Prime Minister's 2012 Challenge on dementia and national guidance in the form of commissioning packs. Patients benefit from more timely diagnosis with a better understanding of their needs and wishes and the NHS benefits through potential reductions in long term care costs.
King's College London (KCL) research and the engagement of KCL researchers in the process of national policy formation have led to the implementation of early diagnosis for people with dementia. Being diagnosed early and well is one of the most important interventions for people with dementia and their families, ensuring effective interventions can be provided early and throughout the course of the illness. This is the fundamental aim of the Croydon Memory Service Model, initially developed by KCL researchers. KCL research has also featured in patient-focused literature and in reports circulated globally by the World Health Organization and Alzheimer's Disease International.
University of Bradford research into medication error management has directly impacted upon policy and practice, informing changes to mitigate potential harm across the 49 children's hospice services in the UK. Implementation of a research-informed medicines management toolkit co-produced by the Bradford team and Children's Hospices UK (now Together for Short Lives) resulted in hospices identifying key vulnerabilities and using guidance from the toolkit to make significant service improvements. This impact of this research has resulted in changes in both practice and behaviour by strengthening systems for error reporting including the analysis of contributory factors — staff are now identifying more errors and near misses, consequently leading to a reduced risk to the children.
Research undertaken at the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering (DoEng) since 1998 on strategic technology management resulted in a principled and generalised method of creating roadmaps for technology and innovation management. This research was developed into a complete toolkit through case studies and consulting by the DoEng's wholly-owned subsidiary Institute for Manufacturing Education and Consulting Services Ltd (IfM ECS). Organisations in 26 countries commissioned over 115 consulting projects during 2008-13, benefiting through improved business performance and practices, the adoption of new technologies or processes and the better alignment of technology strategies with policy and commercial imperatives. IfM ECS's revenue from consulting, publications and events based on the research findings was GBP 3,479,758 in the period.
