Enhanced Performance of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors, Reduced Manufacturing Material and Time to Production

Summary of the impact

Research conducted since July 2008 by the University of East London in collaboration with Control Techniques Dynamics (CTD), a leading manufacturer of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs), has led to the development of a software tool called the PMSM analyser. This tool has helped CTD to improve its motor design methodology by incorporating electromagnetic, thermal and cost models, together with genetic algorithms. In turn, the design optimisation allowed CTD to enhance motor performance and reduce manufacturing time by 30-40%, leading to an increase of 20% in company sales between 2008 and 2013. During the same period the company was able to cut materials usage by 15%.

Transforming the energy efficiency of gas compressors and expanders across the world

Summary of the impact

City University London's patented rack generation mechanism, the `"N" rotor profile', offers substantial improvements on the rotary screw compressors widely used in industry at present. It allows for an increase in compressor capacity and makes compressors more energy efficient. Significantly, it can be easily retrofitted to existing compressors, thereby delivering immediate benefit. The mechanism has already been licensed to 27 major manufacturers around the world, resulting in savings of 0.1% of global electricity consumption and an equivalent reduction in global CO2 emissions. City academic staff have worked with an existing firm (Howden Compressors Ltd) to raise funds and train researchers for the development of this technology. In addition, a new spin- out company (Heliex Power Ltd) has been formed to build on research developed since 2009. Important examples of the impact include:

  • An increase in annual turnover at Howden Compressors Ltd. from £15M in 2009 to £39M in 2011 and a 40 % increase in the number of staff employed.
  • The spin-out company Heliex Power Ltd is valued at £15M and has employed an additional 23 people following investment of £7M from BP Alternative Energy and ESB Novusmodus. A further £3M will have been invested by the end of November 2013. Heliex has been named in the 2013 Global Cleantech 100 list.
  • An estimated reduction in carbon dioxide emissions worldwide from energy efficiency improvements totalling 30 Mt (0.1% of total emissions).

This research has enabled companies that operate worldwide in air compression, refrigeration, air conditioning, oil, gas and process industries to improve their economic and environmental performance in response to demanding governmental demands.

Software Integration and Visualisation for Complex Electrical Motor Design Programming, Simulation and Modelling

Summary of the impact

Research was undertaken into practical methodologies for integrating disparate engineering design software packages, including techniques for managing data in different formats and package functionality available through varying programming models. There was an emphasis on usability for end users allowing a complex solution to be built without advanced programming experience or technical understanding of the underlying packages. The results were made available through a commercial software package marketed by an SME, successfully contributing to a significant increase in company profile, modified internal working procedures and an expanded portfolio of services available to customers. The final product has only recently appeared on the market, but to good review, promising early sales and projections of significant sales and increased turnover.

Increased efficiency in turbomachinery design, manufacturing and performance using 3D inverse design software

Summary of the impact

The development of a novel 3D inverse design method for turbomachinery aerodynamic design at UCL has led to important design breakthroughs for pump and compressor applications. The resulting IP and software has been commercialised by a UCL spinout company Advanced Design Technology Ltd (ADT), which is now considered a global leader in advanced turbomachinery design software. Since 2008, the 3D inverse design codes embedded within ADT's TURBOdesign™ suite of software have been adopted by many of the leading turbomachinery equipment manufacturers in Europe, Japan and the US. These companies are using the TURBOdesign suite to achieve significant improvements in the time taken to design their turbomachinery components. It has also helped them unlock major efficiency gains and hence achieve a reduction in CO2 emissions. [text removed for publication]

Research into trimaran hullforms exploited in novel ship designs by commercial and naval shipping

Summary of the impact

A number of trimaran ocean-going ships, based on original designs conceived by UCL researchers, are currently in use. RV Triton, the demonstrator trimaran, is presently employed as a patrol vessel to provide Australian Customs and Border Protection with increased capability and lower fuel consumption compared to a monohull. The Independence Class of littoral combat ships currently entering service in the US Navy offers improved military capability and one-third lower fuel consumption, with the ensuing benefit of creating almost 2,000 jobs at the shipbuilder, Austal. Similarly, trimaran ferries with their inherent stability have improved passenger comfort and their reduced fuel consumption has lowered operating costs.

Aynsley China Research and Impact via Flux Stoke on Trent

Summary of the impact

In late 2010 Professor Sanderson decided to form the Flux ceramics spin-out company at Staffordshire University in order to exploit a significant market gap he had discovered via his KTP research project for Aynsley China Ltd., Stoke-on-Trent. Flux has been able to exploit the market gap discovered in a way that Aynsley China was unwilling to pursue. Flux has produced cutting edge ceramic tableware design that has been successful in terms of both sales and recognition as a valuable contribution to contemporary tableware design. Flux won the Home and Gardens Design Award in 2012.

Inclusive design

Summary of the impact

The i~design research programme, which has been running in the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering (DoEng) since 2000, sought to understand population diversity in order to better inform design decisions for mainstream everyday products and services. Impact from this programme, since 2008, includes: skills embedded in companies through direct training of over 280 designers and design managers from industry; direct involvement in the improved design of more than 10 new products and services that have gone into production; educational resources for teaching Design and Technology trialled in nine secondary schools; over 800 wearable impairment simulators sold; and extensive web-based guidance, methods and tools for inclusive design accessed in over 170 countries.

Rolls Royce 3D compressor blades

Summary of the impact

Research in the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering (DoEng), which made it possible for the first time to design a 3D compressor blade as a single component, underpinned the design of compressors in Rolls-Royce civil aero engines. Blades designed using the research results yielded fuel efficiency improvements of 0.8% when deployed in Rolls-Royce Trent engines. The efficiency improvements in engines in service are estimated to have delivered savings of 460k tonnes in CO2 emissions and USD 145 million in fuel costs during the assessment period. Rolls- Royce's outstanding order book for engines in which the technology made a significant contribution to efficiency is estimated to be worth GBP 27 billion at list prices as at 31 July 2013; orders received during the assessment period are estimated to be worth GBP 18 billion at list prices.

A New Generation of Supercomputers results from the Co-Design of a Computer Chip for Lattice QCD Calculations

PHYESTA designed 8% of the area of the computer chip for IBM's most recent BlueGene/Q supercomputer product. Global install base of design exceeds $500M.

Significance:
Unique experiment in co-design at the cutting edge of technology. Adopted by both IBM and Fujitsu, who have led in Green500 energy efficiency and top500 supercomputer rankings.

Reach:
This supercomputer architecture has been installed in labs in the UK, the US, the EU, and Japan and is accelerating computational science and advanced manufacturing around the globe. In the UK the BlueJoule system installed in the Hartree center at Daresbury is driving HPC uptake in the advanced manufacturing sector.

Beneficiaries:
IBM, Fujitsu, computational science and the HPC community worldwide.

Design thinking has benefited the economic performance of business and particularly the creative industries, changed awareness of design in everyday life, and informed public policy. Users and consumers have benefited from wider understanding of the genesis of products and services and effects on their quality of life. Design thinking research has been instrumental in forming a new business sector that provides design thinking expertise as consultancy. It has changed the processes of designers and design practices, and fed into UK design education policy. Design thinking has crossed discipline boundaries; for example framing new methods and processes in software engineering.
