Summary of the impact

This case study reports three specific kinds of impact: on the development of Key Stage 5 (AS and A level) curricula; on the practice of Key Stage 5 teachers; on the choices and interests of students (which in turn contributes to impact on curriculum design). Interventions through publications, workshops, committee membership and consultancy have helped to shape developments for many years. Key beneficiaries of this work are students, teachers, examiners and curriculum designers. The work has had particularly significant impact at Key Stage 5, although some of the activity is relevant at earlier stages.

Context, Embodiment and Online Surrogacy: the Impact of 4E Cognition Research on the Ontario SmartData Initiative

Summary of the impact

Wheeler's internationally influential research on 4E (embodied-embedded-extended-enactive) cognition has played a formative role in the genesis and development of SmartData, an innovative public-policy-realizing project spearheaded by the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC). IPC is an agent of the Ontario legislature that acts to uphold and promote the protection of personal privacy. The goal of SmartData is to enhance personal data privacy on the Web, by developing Internet-based agents that act as online surrogates for individuals, securely storing and intelligently disclosing personal information as required. The identified research has influenced the content and implementation of SmartData, by contributing to (i) the IPC's understanding of the link between privacy and context-sensitivity, (ii) the principles shaping the design of the online agents, and (iii) the specification of the first `proof-of-concept' SmartData product, an under-development mobile phone book ordering application.

UOA04-01: Developing and Disseminating Effective Psychological Treatments for Panic Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder

Summary of the impact

While in Oxford, David M. Clark and colleagues developed psychological models of panic disorder and social anxiety disorder, tested the models in experiments, and devised novel psychological treatments (forms of cognitive therapy [CT]) that target the processes in the models. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) showed that CT was more effective than existing psychological and drug treatments, with 70-80% of people recovering. The therapies are recommended first-line interventions in current NICE guidelines, and are widely available in the NHS through the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme, which Clark helped establish and is now evaluating. The treatments are also being used and recommended in many other countries.
