Operating Systems: Harvesting Data

Summary of the impact

i-DAT has developed an open infrastructure for `harvesting' and visualising data to support collaborative interdisciplinary projects in environmental, social and cultural contexts. Framed as a series of `Operating Systems' this research contributes to the strategic activities of not-for-profit, public, private and community sectors, including Arts Council England, Plymouth City Council, UNESCO Biosphere and World Heritage Sites. Through i-DAT's National Portfolio Organisation status, this research delivers significant audience numbers and new work and contributes to and can be measured against impacts in relation to civil society, cultural life, policy making, public services and, to a lesser extent, economic prosperity.

Integra - Fusing music and technology

Summary of the impact

Integra was a €3.1M international research collaboration led by Birmingham Conservatoire and funded by the Culture programme of the European Union. It brought together fourteen new music ensembles and research centres across Europe and Canada between 2005 and 2012. Integra achieved impact along three axes:

Technology was transformed through Integra Live, a new application for live interactive music production and through the modernisation of electronic components for musical works from obsolete to sustainable technologies;

Culture was enriched through the commissioning of 16 new musical works with live electronics receiving over 50 international performances;

Education was enhanced through the Integra "curriculum pilot", a programme establishing a culture of live electronics pedagogy in music higher education institutions.

1 Robots and Avatars

Summary of the impact

This project, Robots and Avatars (http://www.robotsandavatars.net) informs how young people will work, learn and play with new representational forms of themselves and others in virtual and physical dimensions in coming decades making an impact on participants, educators, employers and other artists. Funded by NESTA, the programme influences the way educators and employers engage with young people in workplaces that are likely to include increasing telepresence, collaborative work, flattened hierarchies and international mobility. Exhibitions around Europe showcase work by artists, scientists, designers and architects who explore the relationship between the body, technology and virtual spaces, while forums examine impact and ethics. The research is transmitted to students and young professionals through workshops and mentoring, while social networking provides platforms for international groups. The project is also concerned with special topics like women and technology, and alternative identities for cultural groups. Key beneficiaries include young students and professionals, scholars and members of the general public.

Computer Arts – establishing technoculture collections

Summary of the impact

As a result of research conducted at Birkbeck's VASARI Centre, two significant new art collections of digital art provided the basis for establishing the first National Collection of Computer Art at the Victoria and Albert Museum launched with a major free exhibition in late 2009. The two AHRC funded research projects, `Computer Arts, Histories, Context etc' (2002-5) and `Computer Art and Technocultures' (2007-10) also played a significant role in highlighting the importance of computer art and computer applications in art history. A further consequence of the research was the re-establishment of Computer Arts Society, and several innovative initiatives in digital arts.

Multimedia Performance

Summary of the impact

Professor Joseph Hyde's research explores the role of music and sound in a broader performing/digital arts context, through installation and performance works using interactive technologies. Impact is generated through active participation by audience members as a way to embody the research. This work often engages a broader audience than purely music/sound work, reaching the wider arts, creative industries, education and science/engineering communities. Two recent projects illustrate this. me and my shadow was commissioned by MADE, a European Commission-funded initiative exploring mobility for digital arts. It ran simultaneously in London, Paris, Brussels and Istanbul, and formed the basis for a European Commission White Paper. danceroom Spectroscopy was a collaborative arts/science crossover project, which attracted attention in both arts and science communities. Both projects attracted substantial funding (c. €400,000 and £165,000 respectively), reached large audiences (5000 and 20,000 physical attendees) and had wide press coverage.

Ubisense

Summary of the impact

University of Cambridge research on the principles of `sentient computing' led to the foundation of spin-out company Ubisense, which has grown into a leading location solutions company. By the end of 2011, Ubisense had 170 employees and was floated on AIM with a valuation of £38.6million. It serves customers such as BMW, Airbus, Aston Martin and the US Army. Deployment of the Ubisense Real Time Location System has improved production line accuracy and efficiency by up to 10%.

Virtual VJ: Enabling Engagement Through Audio-Visual Performance

Summary of the impact

Gibson's research-led practice has directly influenced the development of motion-tracking technology used to generate new audio-visual performances. Performances using this innovative art form have taken place in China, Canada and Singapore. They offer audiences a new and enhanced interactive participation experience and help to increase awareness of audio-visual interaction technology and its possibilities. The performances of Gibson's most recent motion- based project Virtual VJ have introduced artists, academics and technologists to innovative interactive art forms and have led to technological developments with associated commercial benefits.

UOA11-05: Boinc – Volunteer Computing

Summary of the impact

Research in the UoA has underpinned the development of the current version of BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing), a technology to enable secure volunteer computing. The research was done as part of the climateprediction.net project that is currently managed as CPDN through the UoA, supporting international climate modelling. CPDN models climate change using donated cycles on users' computers, with almost 700,000 users registered by 2013. Significant work to develop BOINC in CPDN has enabled the public to engage with science more easily and conveniently. BOINC has become recognised as the key open-source tool for volunteer computing and is also available to companies to create their own grid networks. It has been used for a range of applications from driving experiments to find the Higgs particle to using home PCs to detect earthquakes.

Synthetic Biology and Citizen Science

Summary of the impact

This case study is based on research at the interface of computer science and biology, undertaken at MMU. Subsequent inter-disciplinary work was partly supported by the EPSRC Bridging the Gaps: NanoInfoBio project, and led to the creation of a new "citizen science" organization, which is now one of the leading groups of its type in the world. The specific impacts are (1) generation of revenue for a new business operation created as a result of the project, (2) the stimulation of and influence on policy debate, and (3) the stimulation of public interest and engagement in science and engineering.

This work has worldwide cultural and social impact. It reaches and engages new audiences through public gallery programmes, online collections, websites, and other award-winning virtual platforms, acknowledged by artists, curators and critics for their contribution to emerging digital art contexts.
