Reliable Cable Systems for Energy Security

Summary of the impact

The supply of electrical energy to centres of demand is an increasingly important issue as our power generation sources decarbonise. Without innovation in our use of high voltage cables, security of supply to our major cities cannot be guaranteed. Our research has:

  • Identified how outdated international standards governing the rating of power cables can undermine network performance.
  • Developed improved rating methods which will save National Grid £1.2 million annually.
  • Informed new international technical guides.
  • Designed, in conjunction with major industrial partners, cables that optimise transmission for lower operational costs, minimise the risk of network failure and cut carbon emissions.

CPI – Centre for Process Integration

Summary of the impact

The field of conceptual chemical process design as practiced industrially has been influenced significantly by the outputs from the Centre for Process Integration (CPI) at Manchester. Process Integration Ltd (PIL) was spun-out from Manchester and currently employs over 50 staff globally, who have conducted projects that have resulted in annual cost savings of hundreds of millions of US dollars. The application of CPI technology has led to significant reductions in both energy costs and emissions of greenhouse gases. Since 2008 ca. US$350m of savings have been realized through the exploitation of CPI technology with US$1.4m generated from software sales.

Applications of microwave and mm-wave sources and amplifiers for the defence, security and health sectors

Summary of the impact

Radiation sources and amplifiers, in the spectral region from microwave to terahertz, are extensively used in UK industry and public sectors such as security, defence, health and the environment. Companies, including e2v Technologies plc. (e2v) and TMD Technologies Ltd. (TMD), have developed and sold new radiation products based on post-1996 research undertaken at the University of Strathclyde. Their devices accessed new frequency ranges with considerable increases in power and bandwidth. The designs were transferred to industry, where devices have been constructed, jobs created, policy changed and considerable investments made. These sources have had extensive beneficial impact through applications in defence, surveillance, materials processing, health sciences and environmental monitoring.

Variwave: Safeguarding Air Quality by Radically Improving the Efficiency of Industrial Air Cleaners

Summary of the impact

The Leicester Variwave project, in relation to electrostatic dust precipitation, utilises a novel high voltage, high frequency, high power transformer within the power supply, which has enabled cuts in industrial emissions of ~50 per cent and considerable cost savings. Most new-build power stations and many other industrial sites now use technology based on that developed in Leicester. As well as fly ash and dust, the technology has the ability to trap sub-micron particulates thought to be partly responsible for the increase in the number of asthma cases during the past few decades. The MD of [text removed for publication] states `Through publications made by ...Leicester ...we were interested to learn how the team designed their high voltage transformer, and how that transformer operated with the high frequency, high power switched-mode electronics. They achieved that `Holy Grail' combination [of high voltage, frequency, high power] in a 70 kW switched-mode power supply (SMPS) running at 20 KHz and at 50 kV. The publication in the IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery was very helpful, and enabled us to choose the direction when pushing the design boundaries in developing our own high power, high voltage technology for electrostatic precipitators'. Dr Devine, a key member of the Leicester team between 1995 and 2000, was employed by [text removed for publication] in 2001 purely on the basis of his knowledge of Variwave. [text removed for publication] now have 200 units in operation. In 2002 Dr Devine was head-hunted for his knowledge of Variwave and moved to [text removed for publication], who also developed commercial units. The uptake of the technology has been growing steadily since 2001. Exemplar data from one company on the associated reduction in emissions shows 195 switched mode power units installed in boiler plants worldwide by 2004 gave a reduction of around 60%. A 60% reduction in emissions is equivalent to a reduction from 40 mg.m-3 to 16 mg.m-3 of flue gas particulates. Since 2004 to date there are now estimated to be at least 5000 units installed worldwide.

Advanced monitoring technology for high voltage equipment creates economic impact through substantial UK export business

Summary of the impact

Innovative research at Strathclyde University, embodied in its spinout Diagnostic Monitoring Systems (DMS) Ltd, has enabled the Glasgow-based company to become the premier supplier of ultra-high frequency (UHF) systems for detecting harmful partial discharge (PD) activity in high-value gas insulated substations and power transformers. Annual sales rose from £6.7M in 2008 to £11M in 2012, and its staff doubled to 56 employees. DMS' equipment is utilised in 27 countries, with total exports over 2008 - 2013 exceeding £45M. A sustained partnership with Strathclyde has yielded new sensor technologies and secured mainstream international recognition for UHF PD detection techniques, which are being incorporated within a new IEC standard. Economic value of Strathclyde's UHF technology was further emphasised in 2009 when DMS was acquired by Qualitrol, part of the US $46B Danaher Corp that owns numerous global engineering brands including Tektronix, Fluke, Leica Microsystems and Gilbarco Veeder-Root.

System-on-Chip (SoC) IP cores for Digital TV and Multi-Media Systems

Summary of the impact

Research (1993-2008) on novel silicon architectures and design methodologies for digital signal and video processing led to the creation of world leading semiconductor IP cores (chip designs) for implementing the main video and image compression standards including H.264, MPEG4, MPEG2, and JPEG2000. These have been licensed to semiconductor manufacturers worldwide including Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba and Sharp. Since 2008, such encoders/decoders have been incorporated into all DTV/HDTV SoCs produced by Conexant, NXP, Trident Microsystems and Entropic. They have also been used as the hardware acceleration engines in Intel's C2110 Media Processor. At least 150 million chips worldwide having been manufactured incorporating this technology.

3. Practical Waveform Engineering - Reshaping Today's Communication Systems

Summary of the impact

Practical Waveform Engineering, developed at Cardiff, is having a major impact on how modern- day microwave power amplifiers are designed, delivering real competitive advantages for global communications companies such as Nokia-Siemens-Networks and M/A-COM.

Economic impact is through reduced time-to-market and lower design costs, leading to high- performance power amplifier products. Examples include $40M revenue and employment of additional staff for M/A-Com, and the successful spin-off company Mesuro Ltd., generating revenue in excess of £2.5M.

Impact on practice is through successful demonstration of new device technologies and amplifier architectures, the introduction of PWE-based CAD models, and most significantly, the introduction of the "Cardiff Model" into mainstream simulation tools.

Environmental Impact is by improving the efficiency of power amplifiers and significantly reducing the carbon contribution of mobile communications systems, translating into savings of approximately £2.5M/year and a 17 kiloton reduction in CO2 emission for a typical EU network.

Classification within forensic datasets

Summary of the impact

This Keele University research into advanced signal processing and classification methods has led to novel algorithms capable of isolating subtle patterns in complex data. This has been applied in two highly significant application areas: first to the problem of image source identification and second to the problem of unobtrusive but highly secure authentication methods. In the first case this has enabled images captured by mobile phone cameras to be reliably and evidentially linked to source devices. This has huge applicability to those fighting terrorism, paedophile rings and civil unrest by extending detection capabilities to mobile phones in an era in which they are rapidly replacing dedicated cameras. It helps to prove, for example, that a photograph entered as evidence was captured by a specific mobile phone. As most phones can be tied to their user or owner this is extremely important to the successful detection and prosecution of offenders.

In the second case it has enabled criminal record checks to be carried out securely online where previous paper-based systems were both too slow for purpose (taking weeks or months) and inherently insecure, leaving key posts unfilled in the health care industries and education sector; so benefitting the public by solving a problem that was having a negative impact on the running of these public services.

Intelligent Pricing Decision Support Systems

Summary of the impact

Pricing optimisation and revenue management systems represent fundamental progress from the art of pricing to the science of pricing. Our research led the scientific approach in demand modelling and pricing optimization, and produced the first computerised Intelligent Pricing Decision Support Systems (IPDSS) for retail and petroleum, which have led to economic impact and changes in pricing practice. Our research led to spin-off companies that employ over 150 people, with a turnover of £19.2m in 2012, which are the leading providers of IPDSS, used by more than 400 retailers across 80 countries to improve their performance in competitive markets.

Control technologies for advanced energy efficiency and environmental emission reduction in industrial plants

Summary of the impact

Collaborations funded through EPSRC Interact and RCUK UK-China Science Bridge resulted in QUB's advanced control research having important economic and environmental impact in China, Pakistan, Vietnam. This includes the creation of new core modules for the Shanghai Automation Instrumentation Co (SAIC) SUPMAX Distributed Control System series of products now in use for whole plant monitoring and control to maximise energy efficiency and reduce pollutant emissions. These products have since 2008 increased SAIC's revenue by over $50M p.a. Related networked monitoring technologies have been successfully deployed in Baosteel's hot-rolling production lines and in the Nantong Water Treatment Company that treats 20,000 tonnes of industrial waste water daily.
