Redirecting the global search for an Alzheimer’s cure

Summary of the impact

Research by a team at Southampton into amyloid beta protein (A03b2) immunisation to treat Alzheimer's disease has been key to changing the way the global medical community understands and reacts to the disease. The first to observe that A03b2 immunisation clears A03b2 plaques, the team's studies were pivotal in initiating and informing the safe clinical trial development of 40 immunotherapy agents; investments of $3bn by the pharmaceutical industry; and 30 phase II and phase III studies. The research shaped US government policy on new safety measures for clinical trials and played a leading role in the doubling of UK funding to tackle Alzheimer's.

Context, Embodiment and Online Surrogacy: the Impact of 4E Cognition Research on the Ontario SmartData Initiative

Summary of the impact

Wheeler's internationally influential research on 4E (embodied-embedded-extended-enactive) cognition has played a formative role in the genesis and development of SmartData, an innovative public-policy-realizing project spearheaded by the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC). IPC is an agent of the Ontario legislature that acts to uphold and promote the protection of personal privacy. The goal of SmartData is to enhance personal data privacy on the Web, by developing Internet-based agents that act as online surrogates for individuals, securely storing and intelligently disclosing personal information as required. The identified research has influenced the content and implementation of SmartData, by contributing to (i) the IPC's understanding of the link between privacy and context-sensitivity, (ii) the principles shaping the design of the online agents, and (iii) the specification of the first `proof-of-concept' SmartData product, an under-development mobile phone book ordering application.

Improving public engagement with and understanding of science through a zoo-based primate research facility

Summary of the impact

We have established a primate research centre (The Macaque Study Centre) in a zoo environment (Marwell Zoo) for research into primate social cognition. Visitors can watch the science taking place, which 1) significantly increases their perception of the zoo as a place of learning, 2) increases their knowledge about the specific research being conducted, and 3) improves children's attitudes to science as an exciting subject. Marwell Zoo integrate the research into their educational workshops, and similar facilities are now being established in other zoos in light of the demonstrable scientific, public engagement/involvement and animal welfare benefits.
