Techniques for Improved Electromagnetic Design in the Aerospace Industry

Summary of the impact

Research at Swansea University in the area of computational electromagnetics has led to better design of aircraft with respect to radar detection and the screening of internal systems from the effect of unwanted electromagnetic field ingress. A key issue was the development of an ability to accommodate electromagnetically large complex bodies having spatially small, but electromagnetically important, features. In addition, procedures for modelling RF threats, including lightning strikes and electromagnetic hazards, were also developed. Such progress has enabled significant improvement in electromagnetic performance of technology produced by BAE Systems reaching across its Advanced Technology Centre and its business units (Military Aircraft and Information, and Naval Ships). This research enabled two-orders-of-magnitude improvement in efficiency of BAE software compared to previously used techniques, significantly reducing design time. These developments were used on major international programmes such as TYPHOON, the Taranis UCAV (unmanned Combat Air Vehicle).

Advanced simulation technology to optimise the recovery of high value metals through heap leaching

Summary of the impact

This case study describes the creation and use of advanced simulation technology by international mining corporations to optimise high value metal recovery. The technology involved the development of advanced novel computational methods and software tools to model industrial scale heap leach processes for large scale industrial application at major mining operations. This focus on the development of optimised operational strategies has produced considerable economic benefits measured in the $multi-millions to industrial sponsors, including $58 million dollars in additional revenue for one multi-national corporation over one year following the adoption of engineered heaps based upon the advanced simulation tools from Swansea.

The economic benefits of finite element/discrete element analysis when applied to industrial problems involving coupled field and multi-fracturing phenomena

Summary of the impact

Computational research work at Swansea concerned with finite element/discrete element analysis, has made a profound impact on the solution of industrial problems. The development and implementation of novel computational algorithms and their subsequent application to leading edge engineering and scientific problems has been effected through the commercial software system ELFEN, developed collaboratively with Rockfield Software Ltd, a spin-out company from Swansea University. ELFEN has enabled the company to expand through the development of an international reputation as a leading provider of computational technology to the defence, manufacturing, oil recovery, mining and other sectors. Specific examples of economic benefit described in this case study are (i) design methodology for weight reduction in glass container production resulting in significant energy and CO2 emission savings and (ii) computational modelling of rock blasting operations leading to substantial economies in the mining industry.

New computational aerodynamics design tools for the aerospace industry

Summary of the impact

Research from the Sheffield Department of Mechanical Engineering has led to major improvements in engineering analysis and design software for aerospace companies such as Rolls-Royce and Airbus. As a result of introducing new practices based on our research, the organisations have reported significantly reduced time input to design components as well as related economic benefits. For example: Rolls-Royce has reported an order of magnitude improvement in the time needed to mesh components. Similarly, by adopting our highly efficient computational aerodynamics solvers, Defence Science & Technology Laboratory has reduced the time its engineers spent evaluating concepts from many days to a few hours.

A benchmark tool for high performance computing

Summary of the impact

This case study describes the development, application and commercialisation of an open source tool, BSMBench that enables supercomputer vendors and computing centres to benchmark their system's performance. It comprehensively informs the design and testing of new computing architectures well beyond other benchmarking tools on the market, such as Linpack.

The significance of our code is that, unlike other benchmarking tools, it interpolates from a communication- to a computation-dominated regime simply by varying the (physics) parameters in the code, thus providing a perfect benchmark suite to test the response of modern multi-CPU systems along this axis. The impact of this work has great reach: a start-up company, BSMbench Ltd, has been founded to develop and commercialise the software; adopters have included IBM - one of the giants of the supercomputer world (where it uncovered errors in their compilers); it has been deployed by Fujitsu to validate its systems, by HPC Wales, a multi-site, commercially focussed national computer centre and by Transtec, an HPC company employing over 150 staff; and tutorial articles about BSMBench have appeared in magazines such as Linux Format.

This software tool spawned from our research into "Beyond the Standard Model" (BSM) physics which aims to understand the Higgs mechanism in particle physics at a fundamental level. This involved simulating quantum field theories using bespoke code on some of the fastest supercomputers on the planet.

Decomposition, defect correction, and related numerical methods

Summary of the impact

Spatial decomposition methods have been extended to apply to spatial, scale, and temporal domains as a result of work at the Numerical and Applied Mathematics Research Unit (NAMU) at the University of Greenwich. This work has led to a numerical framework for tackling many nonlinear problems which have been key bottlenecks in software design and scientific computing. The work has benefitted the welding industry in the UK because these concepts are now embedded, with parallel computing, in the industry's modern welding design process software.

17. Improving the Aerodynamic Performance of Formula One Racing Cars

Summary of the impact

Since the 1970's the influence of aerodynamics on racing car design has risen substantially, and now in the modern era it is seen as one of the most important factors in producing a race-winning car. Research carried out in the Department of Aeronautics at Imperial College London, into flow control techniques and the development of cutting-edge numerical and experimental methods has allowed specific and significant improvements in the aerodynamic design of Formula One racing cars. This has led to reduced lap times and a more competitive racing environment. These advances have also contributed to improving handling, resulting in a safer racing environment. This research has provided the Formula One industry, which has an estimated annual turnover of $2 billion, with a means to employ engineers who have the key knowledge and insights that allow them to continue to innovate in a tightly controlled engineering environment. The Chief Designer or Chief Aerodynamicist in six out of the twelve 2012 F1 teams have carried out relevant research at Imperial College London.

UOA10-01: Computational fluid dynamics: the Rolls-Royce HYDRA code for jet engine design

Summary of the impact

Rolls-Royce uses the HYDRA computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code for the design of all of its new gas turbine engines. The HYDRA CFD package, including the mathematical theory behind it, was developed by Professor Mike Giles and his research team in the period 1998-2004 at the University of Oxford, and subsequently transferred to Rolls-Royce, forming the basis of the RR corporate CFD strategy with an investment of over 100 person years in development.

Since 2009, HYDRA has become the standard aerodynamic design tool across Rolls-Royce, and has been used to design Rolls-Royce's Trent 1000 engine and the newer Trent XWB. HYDRA has enabled Rolls-Royce to save over [text removed for publication] in test rig expenses, provides superior accuracy compared to its competitors such as FLUENT, and has contributed to increases in engine efficiency of up to [text removed for publication], which in turn has led to higher sales and increased revenue for Rolls-Royce.

Innovative Tunnel Backfill by Pneumatic Conveying of Dry Particulate Materials.

Summary of the impact

Research at GCU led to a novel method for backfilling pipeline tunnels providing the ability to fill tunnels three times more quickly than the traditional method resulting in a cost saving of £1.5M on a single project. This approach is now best practice at Murphy Pipelines Ltd (MPL) and features in current tenders to a value of £30M. The change in fill material lowered the carbon footprint by 5000 tonnes in a CEEQUAL award winning project, in addition, the removable fill material allows the recycling and re-use of tunnels, adding to the assets of the company and reducing costs.

Improving Met Office weather forecasting accuracy

Summary of the impact

Weather impacts all of our lives and we all take a close interest in it, with every news report finishing with a weather forecast watched by millions. Accurate weather forecasting is essential for the transport, agricultural and energy industries and the emergency and defence services. The Met Office plays a vital role by making 5-day forecasts, using advanced computer algorithms which combine numerical weather predictions (NWP) with carefully measured data (a process known as data assimilation). However, a major limitation on the accuracy of these forecasts is the sub- optimal use of this data. Adaptive methods, developed in a partnership between Bath and the Met Office have been employed to make better use of the data, thus improving the Met Office operational data assimilation system. This has lead to a significant improvement in forecast accuracy as measured by the `UK Index' [A] with great societal and economic impact. These forecasts, in particular of surface temperatures, are pivotal for the OpenRoad forecasting system used by local authorities to plan road clearing and gritting when snow or ice are predicted [B].
