Enhancing the public understanding of architecture

Summary of the impact

Few can doubt the economic and social impact of the public's interest in our historic environment. This case study describes how research in the Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture (CASA) at the University of Bath has contributed to the public understanding of historic buildings and landscapes, and to their preservation. The underpinning research pioneered the application of computer-aided design techniques in modelling historic architecture and landscapes. These innovative computer models have been published in academic and popular monographs, and displayed in well-attended public exhibitions and lectures in Europe and America. This work has led to a demonstrable increase in public interest in, and a change in understanding of, these buildings and landscapes. It has also assisted national charities charged with their preservation (notably the National Trust and the Beckford Tower Trust in Bath) as well as helping architects to design new buildings in their proximity (notably in Bath).

Transforming the Built Environment through Building Information Management (BIM)

Summary of the impact

Building Information Management (BIM) involves the creation and use of digital information about built assets. Mandated by UK and other governments because of its potential to reduce waste and optimise efficiency, its successful exploitation requires changes in construction technology and process. This research has had a transformational impact on both. Our technical research forms the basis of the National Library of BIM objects, as well as technological solutions and product developments for many organisations. Our work with UK and overseas governments has shaped industry's uptake of BIM. We have founded a centre of excellence to introduce BIM to practitioners and organisations, and created a commercial joint-venture consultancy company.

1. Energy and Environmental Modelling at Building and Urban Scale

Summary of the impact

The Welsh School of Architecture (WSA) is recognised internationally for its research in developing advanced computational numerical models for simulating the energy and environmental performance of the built environment. These models have been used by leading design practices in the design of major buildings and urban developments. This impact case study presents three models from this research activity that have been widely taken up by industry worldwide, namely, the `building energy' model HTB2, the urban scale `energy and environment prediction' framework EEP and the `building environment' model ECOTECT.

  • HTB2 has been used by leading international practices in the design of over 100 exemplary low energy buildings, including Dubai's award-winning Lighthouse tower, and EMPA, the first zero energy office building in Switzerland.
  • EEP modelling framework for urban simulation has been used to assess the energy performance of existing large estates, for example, for use in housing retrofit programmes, and, to plan low-carbon developments, such as the Gateway City in Ras al Khaimer. It is now accessible through Google SketchUp, a common design tool used by architects.
  • Ecotect underwent significant development at the WSA before its sale to Autodesk in 2008, and by 2010 had over 2000 licenced users globally.

Application of the models, often linked (e.g. HTB2 is the numerical engine for EEP and is accessible within the ECOTECT framework), has resulted in extensive environmental benefits, through reductions in global CO2 emissions. Additionally, there has been a marked impact on practitioners and professional practices, through new guidelines for major international developments (e.g. Pearl Island Qatar and the Chongqing Ba'nan Low Carbon Development).

SubSafe - Games-Based Simulation to Improve Submarine Safety Training

Summary of the impact

SubSafe is a high-fidelity, real-time interactive simulation of a Royal Navy (RN) submarine. The SubSafe programme has improved the delivery of spatial awareness and safety training for RN recruits, over and above legacy practices (such as PowerPoint, "chalk-and-talk" and technical manuals). It has also played a major role in influencing industrial and defence agency uptake of simulation technologies across a range of applications. UK (MoD), Australian and Canadian national strategies relating to future exploitation of simulation in training and concept visualisation have been positively influenced by the success of this programme. SubSafe has also been instrumental in launching a new, innovative games-based simulation company.

Glowing Pathfinder Bugs

Summary of the impact

The project impacts by connecting people with technology through an interactive art project. Portable equipment ensures wide participation: people respond to, and interact with, virtual living creatures in an entertaining but instructive context. Bringing together human participants (able to intervene in the environment) with the virtual bugs (responsive to stimuli/their environment), people are challenged to consider cause and effect in the physical environment as well as their own inter-social relations. The impact which is cultural, imaginative and pedagogic is achieved through touch rather than via the normal emphasis on the communicated world.

Improving Road Investment Appraisal

Summary of the impact

HDM-4 is the most widely used system for road investment appraisal and decision making, generating improvements in public policies and services. Economic development and road agencies in developing countries are major users of the tool. HDM-4 has become the de facto standard used by the World Bank for its road investment appraisals and has been used to assess more than 200 projects since 2008, with some $29.5bn of World Bank loans, credits or grants drawn-down to fund these. Uptake of the tool has led to the commercial success of HDMGlobal, a consortium which manages the distribution and development of the software under exclusive licence from the World Road Association-PIARC, with revenues of £1.6m generated since 2008. HDM-4 has also been utilised for economic assessment and road systems investment management in the UK.

Designing Virtual Worlds

Summary of the impact

Professor Richard Bartle's `player types' model outlines the types of players who play Massively-Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs). Critically, his research shows that for MMORPGs to remain sustainable, the virtual worlds in which they are set must appeal to a balance of these different types of players. This insight enables commercial developers to design games that have broader and more sustainable appeal. Bartle's work has been widely adopted across the MMORPG industry and the principles of his research have informed the development of numerous games, a notable example being BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic. Bartle's work is credited as a key influence in transforming the online games sector from niche to mainstream.
