Different aspects of Professor Paul Watson's research on artificial insemination and semen preservation techniques, have delivered impact in agricultural, human healthcare and ecological spheres. They have contributed to commercial breeding practices, particularly in pigs, providing substantially improved efficiencies and reliability. Research on reducing transmission of infectious agents by semen during storage in liquid nitrogen has been applied to human AI, informing and driving changes in practice to protect against contamination leading to infection. In the field of conservation, the RVC's research has made a significant contribution to international efforts directed at the survival of highly endangered species, supporting preservation of biodiversity.
Impact on health and welfare: The health and welfare of laying hens has been improved by the EU-wide ban on the use of small, barren battery cages, enabled by UoE research on the relationship between cage design and welfare.
Impact on public policy and services: The EU banned conventional battery cages for laying hens through a directive that came into effect on 1st January 2012. New Zealand followed with its own ban in 2012.
Impact on production: Farmers have changed from housing laying hens in battery cages to using more welfare-friendly furnished cages or free-range systems.
Impact on commerce: In the UK, over £400M has been spent to meet the standards laid down by the EU directive.

Attribution: All research was led by Dr Michael Appleby, University of Edinburgh (1984-2001), with collaborators at the Roslin Institute (now UoE), Uppsala and Bristol.
Hundreds of millions of laying hens in the European Community are now kept in enriched cages with significantly more space than conventional battery cages and with specific provision for nesting, scratching and perching. Research undertaken at Bristol University provided much of the evidence base for the full implementation of the relevant European directive in January 2012; the prohibition of the conventional battery cage and the introduction of a superior, scientifically researched alternative. This has had a dramatic impact on husbandry standards and the welfare of laying hens. With Bristol's involvement, similar progress has also been made in countries beyond Europe.
Statistical research has played a leading role in the creation of two pain measurement tools for dogs and a welfare tool for farm animals. The Glasgow Composite Measure Pain Scale (CMPS) was the first validated, multidimensional tool for assessing acute pain in domestic animals in surgical and clinical settings, leading to improved treatment. The tool is based on a statistical model and is unique in providing an intervention threshold for pain relief. Since its launch in 2008, it has been downloaded by over 3,000 users from both veterinary practice and industry and it has been used by several companies for regulatory approval of novel analgesics. A second pain measurement tool (GUVQuest) was developed for chronic pain in dogs, enabling its impact on quality of life to be assessed. This tool is suitable for animal owners and is being exploited commercially in web-based form. A welfare tool for pigs has also been developed using the same statistical principles and work is underway on the development of similar tools for cows and cats.

Significance: Our research informed welfare guidelines impacting upon housing of around 200 million laying birds in the EU. Our work has been adopted in EC regulations, and they are pushing all EU member states to ensure all their producers install aerial perches over slatted surfaces.

The Glasgow Composite Measure Pain Scale (CMPS) has provided the first validated pain questionnaire for the rapid assessment of acute pain in dogs in surgical and clinical settings. Developed by the University of Glasgow School of Veterinary Medicine, the scale aids clinical decisions on appropriate pain relief intervention and has been freely downloaded by over 3,000 clinical users since its launch in 2008. In addition, it has been used extensively by veterinary healthcare companies to successfully obtain regulatory approval for analgesic drugs and in marketing support materials. The University of Glasgow researchers have been instrumental in developing international pain guidelines with the World Small Animal Veterinary Association, which represent more than 180,000 veterinarians worldwide, and has thereby promoted awareness of pain management in companion animals.
