Intelligent Systems incorporating Automatic Classification and Carbon Footprinting for Corporate E-Procurement

Summary of the impact

Two Knowledge Transfer Partnership projects, carried out between 2006 and 2009, between an e-commerce marketplace provider (@UK plc) and the University of Reading, led to the development of two software tools that were launched in 2010. The tools, SpendInsight and GreenInsight, are the first of their kind to use artificial intelligence techniques to handle the extremely challenging data associated with purchasing in large organisations. Since their launch, these tools have been used by @UK plc to identify procurement savings and environmental costs of procurement activities for governments, multi-national corporations, academic institutions and healthcare providers. Over the last three years @UK plc has benefitted from the launch of these products as it has provided them with a competitive advantage over the market place, increased the quality and efficiency of their spend analyses and led to multi-million pound licensing agreements. An analysis of spending in some of the NHS Trust Foundations has led to changes in procurement behaviours that have resulted in hundreds of thousands of pounds saved to date — benefitting not only the NHS, but also taxpayers.

2. Meeting the Challenges of Data Security

Summary of the impact

The security of data in printing and network environments is an area of increasing concern to individuals, businesses, government organisations and security agencies throughout the world. Mathematical algorithms developed at the School of Mathematics at Cardiff University represent a significant step-change in existing data security techniques. The algorithms enable greater security in automatic document classification and summarisation, information retrieval and image understanding. Hewlett-Packard (HP), the world's leading PC vendor, funded the research underpinning this development and patented the resulting software, with the aim of strengthening its position as the market leader in this sector of the global information technology industry. Hewlett Packard has incorporated the algorithms in a schedule of upgrades to improve the key security features in over ten million of their electronic devices. Accordingly, the impact claimed is mitigating data security risks for HP users and clients and substantial economic gain for the company.

Data maps with applications to medical diagnostics and monitoring

Summary of the impact

Advanced technologies for data visualisation and data mining, developed in the Unit in collaboration with national and international teams, are widely applied for development of medical services. In particular, a system for canine lymphoma diagnosis and monitoring developed with [text removed for publication] has now been successfully tested using clinical data from several veterinary clinics. The risk maps produced by our technology provide early diagnosis of lymphoma several weeks before the clinical symptoms develop. Institute Curie (Paris), applies this data mapping technique and the software that has been developed jointly with Leicester in clinical projects.

Improving Data Models in Operational IT Systems

Summary of the impact

The impact of this work stems from the provision of better quality information models, and is manifest via: (a) reduced cost through improved reuse and less rework; (b) improved system interoperability; and (c) enhanced assurance and checking that information requirements are supported by the resultant systems. The approach has been applied in commercial environments, such as Shell (UK), where it has reduced development costs by up to 50% ($1m in one case). It has also been applied in the defence environment, forming a part of underpinning standards currently being implemented by the UK and Swedish Armed Forces.

Linking Archaeological Data - enabling semantic infrastructure in the digital archaeology domain

Summary of the impact

Our research has enabled archaeological professional and commercial organisations to integrate diverse archaeology excavation datasets and significantly develop working practices. Commercial archaeological datasets are usually created on a per-site basis structured via differing schema and vocabularies. These isolated information silos hinder meaningful cross search and comparison. As the only record of unrepeatable fieldwork, it is essential that these data are made available for re-use and re-interpretation. As a result of the research, the Archaeology Data Service, English Heritage, the Royal Commissions on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland and Wales have published as Linked Data important excavation datasets and national vocabularies that can act as hubs in the web of archaeological data.

Financial Fraud Detection

Summary of the impact

Payment card fraud is a significant cost to business, as well as being a route to funding of organised crime, drug smuggling and terrorism. Detection of fraud requires a technique that is both transparent and adaptive. We have used the Department of Computing's expertise in machine learning and rule induction to develop a scalable method of automated fraud detection that meets the industry's needs. This technique is now being commercialised by AI Corporation, with a contract for its use having been placed by the world's largest retailer. Contracts with major banks are currently under negotiation.

Facet analysis and its influence on the major systems of library classification

Summary of the impact

Research on the theory and design of faceted classifications as exemplified in the Bliss Bibliographic Classification 2nd edition (BC2) has influenced the recent development of two out of the three internationally important library classification schemes, the Universal Decimal Classification, and the Dewey Decimal Classification. Collectively these are used in over 350,000 libraries worldwide, and thousands of new publications in the relevant subject classes are now classified using systems based on research undertaken in UCL Information Studies.

State-of-the-art reasoning systems developed in the UoA have underpinned the standardisation of ontology languages, and play a critical role in numerous applications. For example, HermiT, software developed in the UoA, is being used by Électricité de France (EDF) to provide bespoke energy saving advice to 265,000 customers in France, and a roll out of the use of the system to all of their 17 million customers is planned.

3) Enabling Semantic Reasoning for Linked Data

Summary of the impact

Within this case study we present the TrOWL technology developed at the University of Aberdeen that enables more efficient and scalable exploitation of semantic data. TrOWL and its component algorithms — REL, Quill and the Aberdeen Profile Checker — have had non-academic impact in two key areas. With respect to practitioners and professional services, the technology has enabled the introduction of two important World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards: OWL2 and SPARQL 1.1. This has led to impact in the way that many companies work, across a range of sectors. Further, through partnership with specific companies, the use of TrOWL has changed the way they operate and the technical solutions they provide to clients. These collaborations have led to economic impacts in companies such as Oracle in "mitigat[ing] the losses of potential customers", and IBM in "using the TrOWL reasoning infrastructure in [their] Smarter Cities solutions".

Database migration and data conversion for improved, consistent and integrated address database for the Government of Gibraltar

Summary of the impact

The UoA research enabled a step increase in the technical and commercial capabilities of Atlantic Geomatics (UK) Ltd (AGUK, Cumbria) and the development of a postal addressing solution for the Government of Gibraltar (GoG). The beneficiaries and benefits included: AGUK who secured a contract safeguarding jobs and opening new international markets. Moreover, the GoG now have a definitive solution for legislation to replace their manual, multiple and inconsistent address lists by a spatially-based official address register (OAR) incorporating geographical information thereby enabling the people of Gibraltar to receive enhanced services (e.g. postal, emergency, utilities) from a centrally managed OAR.
