Project HORIZON: Seafarer fatigue and its effect on cognitive performance

Summary of the impact

Seafarer fatigue is a major issue for the safety and economics of shipping and the protection of the marine environment. Estimates suggest that 25% of marine casualties are caused by fatigue.

Project HORIZON demonstrated that sleepiness levels for some watch-keeping regimes are high, and actual sleep can occur. The main outcome of the project was a fatigue prediction model for use by voyage planners to ease workloads on ships' crews.

The introduction of such fatigue risk mitigation measures will potentially save lives, have an impact on the competitive success of global shipping companies, and bring significant economic and environmental benefit.

Commercial development of novel environmentally-benign marine antifouling coatings

Summary of the impact

Marine biofouling is caused by the adhesion of macroalgae, microbial slimes and other marine organisms for instance barnacles to underwater surfaces, such as ships hulls. The research from the Bioadhesion and Biofouling Research Group (BBRG) that tackles this important problem has had a direct impact on commerce, with three new companies entering the marine coatings industry and a fourth achieving superior effectiveness from their existing product line. All have been able to develop novel products (with associated patents) positioned to address the requirements of an increasingly-stringent environmental legislative framework, seeking to reduce or eliminate the impact of toxic biocides on non-target species in the marine environment. In addition, some of these companies have enjoyed increased investments in their R&D programmes and proven market advantage over their competitors.

Developing a Performance Management Methodology for Chinese Organisations in a Turbulent Environment

Summary of the impact

This case study describes the effects of a new performance management system, developed in China and adopted by organisations facing complex management challenges. To date, seven public and private sector organisations have successfully used the `3E' (Effectiveness, Efficacy, and Efficiency) system for tasks as varied as developing performance indicators, improving management communication and designing appraisal systems that work under conditions of rapid growth and change.

The participating organisations include the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Hunan University, Tonsan Adhesives Inc, Xingxiang Insurance, Sun-rivier local government, Liao-ling Plaze hotel and Hua-bao International Holdings. Their adoption of the 3E system has resulted in improved performance management within these organisations.

The Ancient Trireme

Summary of the impact

Since its launch in 1987, the Olympias trireme reconstruction has become the most frequently referenced representation of an ancient warship. Through its appearance in videos and television programmes, and illustrations in numerous popular encyclopedias, textbooks and academic works, it has raised awareness of ancient Mediterranean seafaring worldwide, as well as providing experimental data and acting as a paradigm of a project in experimental archaeology. It is also regularly used as a symbol of Greece's maritime heritage and contribution to the development of democracy. It has served to popularise Greece's maritime heritage and improve understanding of ancient shipping. Impact is in Cultural Life, primarily through preserving, conserving and presenting cultural heritage, developing stimuli to tourism and enhancing the experience of tourists, and secondarily in inspiring new forms of creative endeavour.
