In recent years, few institutions have contributed more intensively than Southampton to the wider appreciation of two of the 19th Century's most influential thinkers, Arthur Schopenhauer and Friedrich Nietzsche. By way of a determined campaign of public engagement, we have shared our research on Schopenhauer and Nietzsche with over three million members of several different publics. This has resulted in genuine cultural enrichment: our interlocutors have encountered new approaches to topics that they find intrinsically compelling, and have been prompted to think and feel differently about issues that are — or that have come to be — of real significance for them.
Research on Presocratic philosophy by Catherine Rowett (formerly Osborne) has had impact on the wider public, both at home and abroad, in two key areas: (a) it has helped to satisfy the intellectual and cultural curiosity of people in the UK and beyond; and (b) it has extended public understanding of the potential risks and rewards of stock-market investments. Impact (a) is achieved (i) via public engagement, including publication and distribution of a book for the popular market, both in English and in translation, and via public lectures and talks, and (ii) by inspiring others to use the results in for example, radio broadcasting. Impact (b) is achieved by way of a guidebook for those new to investment in stocks and shares, underpinned by (among other things) Rowett's work on Presocratic Philosophy.
The impact of Cruise's work has been to extend and enrich the understanding, appreciation and value of aspects of British art from a university art historical research environment to Fine Art auctioneering houses, picture dealers, museum curators, and the general public. His greatest impact has been on cultural life and on museum and gallery culture. Cruise has investigated the art of the Victorian period and re-evaluated it through widely disseminated outputs, reviving interest in the life and work of Simeon Solomon and in drawing as a practice. Addressing issues of sexuality, religion, race, and patronage he has re-enhanced the relevance of Victorian works of art for various constituencies. In his Pre-Raphaelite drawing project [3.12, 3.13] he drew attention to a significant but largely overlooked feature; as a reviewer observed: "How could the role that drawing played for the Pre-Raphaelites have been [hitherto] so overlooked?" (Country Life, 16th March 2011).
This case study is of impact arising from research by Peter Osborne in the area of philosophy of art — specifically, contemporary art: the philosophical reinterpretation and critical analysis of conceptual and post-conceptual art, from the early 1960s to the present.
This research has had a significant effect upon the awareness and understanding of the philosophical issues at stake in contemporary art for a range of practitioners in art institutions, of which three (in the UK, Norway and Italy) make up the case study here: at the level of their direction, curation and adult programming (non-HE art education) and in associated public discourse.
Research by Professor Michael Finnissy at the University Southampton into the development of musical notation and works of extended duration has resulted in the composition of more than ninety new musical works, which have been publicly performed hundreds of times in classrooms, concert halls, at international music festivals and on radio, by both amateurs and professionals, to audiences totalling more than 700,000. Through concerts, recordings, public lectures and media coverage, Finnissy has disseminated his research insights and creative approach to a growing audience, contributing to popular knowledge of contemporary music and compositional practice, the democratisation of new music performance, and the involvement of new music in social and political debate.
In times of financial instability, there is particular pressure on arts and cultural institutions to operate effectively and attract, develop and retain new audiences. Research conducted at the University of Southampton's Winchester School of Art has directly enabled key cultural institutions to address these challenges. Since 2009 three major Tate exhibitions/events with related public education activities were built out of this research — resulting in over £140,000 of economic benefits for the Tate through ticket sales, a broadening of traditional audiences, and greater public understanding and knowledge of art and social history.
Through public engagement across print and broadcast media, and a series of high-profile collaborations with world-leading arts institutes, our research has stimulated new thinking about the purpose of arts broadcasting over the past 40 years. It has refocused attention on two neglected TV landmarks, Civilisation (1969) and Ways of Seeing (1972), encouraging broadcasters and cultural institutions to consider beauty and civilisation as inclusive rather than elitist concepts, a debate that succeeded in engaging new public audiences. There was economic benefit to the National Gallery and the British Film Institute and, not least, interest in the research findings led to the BBC rebroadcasting Civilisation in 2011.
Rai Gaita's work brings a distinctive conception of good and evil to bear on a range of central and abiding moral questions. His work has shaped and changed the understanding of core moral and political issues by the general public in Australia and in other countries, and it has influenced the attitudes of policy makers and lawyers. Some of his books are on the reading list for the Higher School Certificate in Australia and have therefore had an immediate impact on the moral sensitivities of young Australians.
Not many contemporary moral philosophers have had such impact beyond the academic sphere. Why and how has Gaita achieved this impact? While academic philosophers tend to present their ideas in more technical form, Gaita's work crosses the boundaries between philosophical inquiry and literature. He brings philosophical issues to life by using the narrative form. For instance, his book Romulus, My Father, which uses biography to meditate on the human condition, has reached and influenced vast numbers of people. It was adapted into a film of the same title internationally released in 2007 and 2008. The inextricable connection between form and content in Gaita's work enables non-philosophical audiences to engage with, and respond to, his moral philosophy. In addition, his work has made a substantial contribution to the publishing and creative industries through the outstanding success of his books and related outputs.
Professor Alex Danchev's research on the relationship between art, artists and politics has underpinned material changes to curatorial approach and practice at the Imperial War Museum, contributed to the planning of exhibitions at the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery, London, and has added depth to museums' and galleries' public programmes. It has stimulated new thought and practice amongst artists and writers, and has generated wider public debate about art, artists and politics. It has enriched the cultural debate by engaging thinkers, writers, broadcasters, practitioners, curators and educators, and the diverse publics with whom they engage.
The Spinoza Research Network (SRN) contributed to public discourse through online presence, public lectures and radio interviews, with impact through increased understanding and awareness, and changes in behaviour. The project had impact on cultural life through engagement with artists and impact on their practice. The SRN was a 2-year AHRC-funded project for researchers in multiple disciplines working on Spinoza with non-academics. In 2008-10 SRN gained 200 members from over 16 countries. Membership is currently around 250. The outputs were an interactive website, two conferences, and an edited book, public speaking, a Facebook group, a reading group, and two radio interviews.
