Early Medieval Carved Stones And Landscape: Rhynie Environs Archaeological Project (REAP)

Summary of the impact

Building on Dr Meggen Gondek's expertise in Pictish stone sculpture, the Rhynie Environs Archaeological Project (REAP) has transformed popular understandings of early medieval stone monuments in northern Britain by: (i) creating a network of outreach activities engaging the public during successive seasons of archaeological fieldwork at a unique collection of fifth- to seventh-century early medieval inscribed stone monuments, (ii) disseminating the research discoveries and results to a range of audiences via traditional and new media, (iii) instigated strategies for the heritage management and conservation of the prehistoric and early historic landscape of Rhynie.

Developing the role of extended schools

Summary of the impact

Extended schools research and related projects have contributed to debate and policy-making in the UK and in countries in Europe, Asia and Australasia post-2008 on the role of the school in relation to disadvantage. Our research has strongly informed English government policy 2008-11 and the actions (including funding and scaling up extended schools) taken to develop community-oriented, full-service and extended schools to help address the impact of disadvantage on educational outcomes. We have had sustained and far-reaching impact on the policy and actions of schools and local authorities (LAs) in their development of extended schools. Professional practice changes include greater willingness to collaborate across agencies and an amendment to policy on `raising aspirations' to become `reaching aspirations'. Additionally our innovative research methodology, a version of theory of change, has been taken up and used by schools, LAs and other organisations.

UOA04-04: Eating Disorders: The Development and Dissemination of Effective Treatments

Summary of the impact

Eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and related conditions) are common, often chronic and disabling, and sometimes fatal. Christopher Fairburn and colleagues have engaged in long-term research into the nature and treatment of eating disorders. The impacts are: (1) developing the standard measurement tools for eating disorders; (2) devising the leading and most effective evidence-based therapy for bulimia nervosa (`CBT-BN'); (3) showing that a modified form of the treatment is effective for all eating disorders (`CBT-E'); (4) developing an effective and popular self-help version. These treatments allow, for the first time, a significant chance of complete and sustained recovery from an eating disorder. The treatments are recommended by NICE and international guidelines, and are being disseminated worldwide.
