Benefits are a quality content experience delivered in a context-sensitive manner (social/economic). Best Practice Guidance: Responding to the Psychosocial/Mental Health Needs of People Affected by Disasters/Major Incidents

Summary of the impact

The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO)/Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC) Guidance on "Psychosocial Care for People Affected by Disasters and Major Incidents: a Model for Designing, Delivering and Managing Psychosocial Services for People Involved in Major Incidents, Conflict, Disasters and Terrorism" is a conceptual and practical resource for: developing government policy; planning services, and providing training for health and social care staff. It was informed by underpinning research conducted in Aberdeen following the 1988 Piper Alpha oil platform disaster and evidence briefings generated from a comprehensive review of the world literature. Adopted as best practice guidance by all 28 NATO Members and Partner Nations, it has had regional, national and international impact by: enabling authorities to deliver integrated psychosocial care and mental health services; enhance training; raise awareness, and facilitate the effective utilisation of resources in responding to psychosocial/mental health needs post- incident.

Legislative change and legal practice

Summary of the impact

Two particular examples of impact on legislative change and legal practice are described: impact on the parliamentary process and impact on mental health practice and procedure. The first example describes contribution to debate during the parliamentary process for the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Bill and contribution to the decision to reject rushed emergency legislation. The research team's response to the consultation by the Justice 2 Committee was widely referred to by organisational representatives and individuals in the debates. The second example focuses on the impact from a key text, which has been used by both sides and judges in Sheriff Court appeals. The impact here is in its verifiable effect on the practice of law in courts and in the making of legal determinations.

Counterweight

Summary of the impact

The Counterweight Programme (CW) is a structured model for obesity management in primary care settings. CW has made substantial changes to clinical and public health guidelines and to practice nationally and internationally: the Programme has since been adopted in Primary Care Galway, Ireland and for a government funded trial in Ontario, Canada. The creation of a spin out company, Counterweight Ltd, in 2011 resulted in concomitant job creation and significant commercial activity, with CW now being used in private healthcare, pharmacies, fitness clubs, and by freelance healthcare professionals. Moreover, the programme has significantly benefited the health and welfare of obese patients and improved care practice by increasing quality, accessibility and cost effectiveness of weight management services in the UK.

Eco-Friendly Optimisation of Ceramic Membrane Reactor for Monetising Stranded Natural Gas

Summary of the impact

Fifteen years of ceramic membrane research at Robert Gordon University and the applied development programme by the RGU spinout Gas2 Ltd have culminated in the development of the Gas2 pMR™ CPOX process and its new GTL reactor. This technology has captured the attention of major global energy investment company Lime Rock Partners for possible onshore and offshore deployment addressing the monetisation of stranded gas and to avoid flaring and venting of unwanted associated gas. The economic impact is £17.2 million in equity investment during 2008- 2013 with concomitant impacts of new processes and employment opportunities at Gas2, with environmental impact for the oil & gas industry from eco-friendly handling of stranded natural gas.

Environmental Monitoring/ Sampling in the Marine Environment

Summary of the impact

This impact study deals with the development and implementation of an internationally recognised, statistically-based sampling regime for marine sediment hydrocarbon contamination. Its Economic and Environmental impacts include a reduction in sampling and analysis costs to operators while maintaining a statistically robust monitoring procedure to protect and enhance the environment (including valuable fisheries) and support oil and gas exploration/production. This regime was initially adopted by the UK Government in the UK Marine Monitoring and Assessment Strategy in 2009. These statistical-based sampling protocols have subsequently passed into wider environmental policy and the Random Stratified Statistical Sampling Regime represents the accepted standard for marine monitoring in the £22 billion oil exploration and production industry in the UK Continental Shelf. This regime has now been taken-up internationally by the other 14 countries bordering/discharging to the North East Atlantic through the OSPAR Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North East Atlantic.

Impact on literacies and learning in schools

Research since the late 1990s has developed an evidence base on the role of school libraries in developing information literacy and learning. The research has impacted on policy (social and education) and decision-making at governmental level; policy, strategy and advocacy in professional bodies and NGOs; policy, practice and service delivery in individual school library services; and practice of individual school librarians. The research has helped state the case for the contribution of school libraries to learning and has been used to develop the professional role of school libraries and librarians across the world.

Asylum determination guidance

Summary of the impact

A series of projects which examined judicial reception of evidence and enabled development and uptake of guides for best practice in asylum determination has contributed to international good practice in a field where it is difficult to ensure objective and fair decision making. The projects included analysis of: gender guidelines; medical evidence; Country of Origin Information (COI); and best practice where children are subject to the asylum process, including COI and evidence relating to age assessment. The research has stimulated and contributed to debate among practitioners. Further, medical evidence guidelines proposed by the research team have been adopted by the International Association of Refugee Law Judges (IARLJ) affecting judicial activity internationally. In addition, research into reception of evidence surrounding COI led to a position on an Advisory Board and development of a further best practice guide.

Impact on Professional Accounting Training Internationally

Summary of the impact

This case study details influence on professional accounting education, practice and policy on a global and national stage. The research team has undertaken a stream of research which has critically examined access to Chartered Accountancy training and subsequent assessment. Internationally, their work has underpinned the policy development of International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) in the education area. Nationally, the work with IFAC has led to further research for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) who have implemented a number of their recommendations. In this case we will focus on their influence on ICAS' policies for a) the development and assessment of non-technical skills in Chartered Accountants and b) the introduction of a school leaver route into the profession.
