A world first in flight safety: University of Portsmouth academics bring avionic data analysis into the 21st century

Summary of the impact

A Portsmouth team has helped revolutionise how flight data from aircraft flight recorders is being analysed. This has improved the corporate performance of a leading UK company in a globally competitive market by helping it expand its business in the UK and to subsequently compete in the dynamic North American market. Historically, data was manually evaluated on a flight by flight basis. Research by the Portsmouth team means such data can now be analysed automatically by artificial intelligence (AI), saving significant man-hours, and allowing the company to diversify domestically into a related market and to expand internationally. The techniques developed were subsequently applied in a new market, enabling the new corporate partner to realise savings estimated at £100,000 p.a.

Clinical Outcome Modelling Saves Lives

Summary of the impact

  1. Practitioner/professional service impact. Our work on clinical outcome modelling has influenced the Royal College of Physicians' (RCP) new standard for the assessment of the severity of acute illness (known as the "National Early Warning Score" or NEWS). The specific recommendation is for adoption by NHS bodies, but is already being adopted internationally.
  2. Health impact. The chairman of the RCP working party estimated that our work could result in the saving of thousands of lives per year.
  3. Economic impact. Our work is incorporated in the VitalPAC system developed by The Learning Clinic Ltd (TLC), and currently deployed to more than 20 hospitals.

Cognitive research leads to improved lie detection processes and training adopted by professionals in forensic, intelligence, security and commercial settings

Summary of the impact

The innovative Cognitive Load (CL) technique, based on cognitive theory, yields significantly superior lie detection results by capitalising on the fact that interviews can be devised that are more difficult for liars than truth-tellers. This CL technique, pioneered by Vrij, is used for ethical information-gathering interviewing and undercover and interrogation purposes by police, military and intelligence agencies worldwide. Training of these law enforcement professionals as a result of our research has been implemented. An insurance company has adopted a revised protocol as a result of applying our research and has implemented an industry-leading product for reducing fraudulent insurance claims.

Demonstration of the ineffectiveness of water softeners in reducing symptoms of eczema in children

Summary of the impact

Our research has shown that water softeners are not effective in reducing the symptoms of moderate to severe eczema in children, and that their use provides no additional benefit over usual care. This finding has had an impact on Healthcare practitioners ensuring they are now able to offer the evidence-based advice to patients that the use of water softeners will not alleviate the symptoms of eczema. This advice not only eliminates false hope in patient groups but also results in significant cost savings for families of children with moderate to severe eczema who might otherwise have purchased water softeners.

Driving innovation in wood protection for the marine environment

Summary of the impact

Marine wood borers cause huge economic losses by damaging maritime structures. Research conducted by Cragg's team has driven the move from broad-spectrum, environmentally-hazardous wood protection methods towards environmentally-benign approaches tailored to target specific organisms. Their novel testing methods have accelerated evaluation of protection methods while reducing testing costs (impact 1). Their evaluations have been used to inform guidelines for selection of timbers for waterside construction issued by the UK Environment Agency (impact 2) and to market less well-known timber species (impact 3). Their information on invasive borers affects local and global decision making (impact 4).

Enabling access to local historical information for everywhere

Summary of the impact

The Great Britain Historical Geographical Information System (GBHGIS) has computerised geographical surveys of Britain, including Ordnance Survey mapping and all censuses 1801-1971, integrating them into a consistent, innovative geo-spatial and geo-semantic information architecture, and disseminated data via many channels including the UK Data Service, direct work for government agencies (e.g. DEFRA, National Archives), and our own very popular web sites that are used extensively by genealogists and the general public with over 1.8 million unique users per annum. Impact of the technical innovation is mainly on non-UK academics, but within the UK we have made it vastly easier to place modern local issues in long-run perspective — and lots of people and organisations have.

Enhancing public understanding of nuclear safety issues following the Fukushima nuclear accident

Summary of the impact

This impact case study describes major public communication activities by Professor Jim Smith on the immediate and long-term consequences of the Fukushima accident through radio, television, print and internet media. During the weeks after Fukushima, Smith made a key contribution to the developing scientific understanding of the likely consequences of the accident and to the worldwide dissemination of that understanding. This made a documented improvement to international news agencies' coverage of the event (Evidence 2, 4, 5) and "helped elevate and inform the debate" on the risks and consequences of nuclear power (Evidence 2).

Enhancing Support for Victims of Fraud

Summary of the impact

This case study concerns the research of the Centre for Counter Fraud Studies relating to both individual and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) victims of fraud. It highlights how the underpinning research has influenced major national policy changes, such as the formation of Action Fraud and the services they and other bodies, such as the National Fraud Authority (NFA), Serious Fraud Office (SFO) and Office of Fair Trading (OFT), provide to support victims. It also demonstrates how the research has informed policy-makers of the significant impact of fraud on victims, stimulating changes in the services offered; with the Sentencing Council conducting a review of sentencing for fraud related offences.

Summary of the impact

Political instability and insecurity in Africa have become increasingly salient issues since the 1990s. For historical reasons the UK and France are the two EU member states with long-standing commitments in Africa. Chafer's research has had an impact in three main ways: by providing research-based evidence that has informed decision-making, by providing policy recommendations regarding opportunities for cooperation and by sustaining `institutional memory' concerning the Saint-Malo process, which promised enhanced Anglo-French cooperation on Africa policy. In these ways it has made a significant contribution to enhancing peace and security on the continent.
