Stroke affects 15 million people globally and is a leading cause of death and adult physical disability. King's College London (KCL) research has provided the evidence that underpins many of the present day policies, guidelines and clinical practice for stroke care, not only in the UK but also in other countries. KCL research has demonstrated that stroke units are effective and reduce mortality and dependence by 22%. The implementation of these findings in England has increased the number of patients managed on a stroke unit from 18% to 62% between 2000-2012, preventing 550 deaths, enabling 1,700 more patients to make a full recovery and saving £82 million per year.
Research by Community and Health Research Unit (CaHRU) broadly impacted on healthcare provision and care received by patients from ambulance services. The research directly informed policy and was a key factor in improving prehospital care for emergencies by directly influencing care systems, regulators, ambulance services, paramedics, and service users, initially in the East Midlands and subsequently throughout England from 2008 onwards.
The research which aimed to improve quality of ambulance care led to: development of new clinical quality indicators for ambulance services in England; benchmarking of service quality; initiatives to address gaps in care; measurable improvements in managing pain, heart attack, stroke, asthma and diabetes across all English ambulance services. Regulators now use these quality indicators to assess ambulance trusts in England.
The emergency care team at Warwick Medical School has a strong track record of high-quality health sciences research encompassing evidence synthesis, health-services research and clinical trials. Our trials of a 03b2-agonist (salbutamol) in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) have influenced therapeutic recommendations in the International Sepsis Guidelines (2013), reducing the use of this potentially detrimental therapy. Our cardiac arrest research informed the 2010 international guidelines on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) led to the generation of new intellectual property, and prompted industrial collaborations to build new technologies, such as TrueCPRTM (2013). These have led to improved CPR practice and improved patient survival. Furthermore, our research has led to major policy changes and to a redesign of UK emergency healthcare, improving cost efficiency, the patient experience and clinical outcomes (e.g. 95% of patients were treated within 4 hours - up from 65%; and people leaving without been seen reduced to less than 5%).

These advances are informed by our synthesis and application of rigorous, innovative methodologies relating to questionnaire development and real-time data collection.
The research has led to the design of a new clinical pharmacy service model, centred on community pharmacies, to improve the care of patients with palliative care needs living in the community. This resulted in better provision of information for patients (and their carers) and new training resources and staff development opportunities for the multi-disciplinary palliative care team. Funding has been secured to rollout the new service across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board (NHS GGC - 1.2M population) in 2013. The research has also supported a successful bid to explore the service model in a remote and rural Health Board (NHS Highland) and has informed specific programmes of Macmillan Cancer Support UK, pharmacy workforce planning, and the Boots Macmillan Information Pharmacists initiative.
Worldwide, around 5 million stroke-related deaths occur annually, while another 5 million people are left with chronic disabilities following strokes. University of Glasgow research demonstrated that admission to a specialist stroke unit significantly improves patients' chances of survival and recovery. This discovery transformed the culture of stroke service delivery in the UK. These studies drove the development of new advice in national and international clinical practice guidelines and promoted the implementation of NHS healthcare targets and audit activities to standardise and evaluate the quality of stroke care. In the UK, the early death rate after stroke has fallen from over 45% to under 30% in the past 20 years; at least one-fifth of that decline is attributed to the introduction of stroke units.
Improving patient experience of health services is a policy priority worldwide. The University of Manchester (UoM) has conducted research on patient experience since 1995, leading to the development of a series of validated measures for assessing patient experience of quality of care in primary care, including access to care and the degree to which services are patient-centred. Our measures have been in routine use in the NHS since 2004, sent to samples of several million patients. The data have been used to provide incentives for the highest quality practices, and to inform policy makers about current care throughout the UK.
Research on the financing of adult social care in England resulted in the development of a full simulation model of the social care economy. This has allowed for the quantification of the costs and benefits of different funding reform options. The research has hence allowed for identification of the limitations of the current financing of social care, and has been relied on by the Government and by the Dilnot Commission in the formulation of new funding policies. It has also been used by social care groups (such as Age UK) to highlight the problems facing the funding of social care.
Changes in key socio-economic patterns are threatening the sustainability of the public social care system. The Personal Social Services Research Unit (PSSRU), part of the Social Policy Unit's Health and Social Care Group, has used a range of modelling methods to analyse present and future costs and benefits of alternative social care funding policy scenarios. PSSRU's rigorous modelling has contributed significantly to shaping both the Labour and Coalition Governments' policies on funding long-term care, by identifying the need for funding reform and by assisting the government to define and appraise alternative reform strategies. This research has achieved considerable reach across key social care stakeholders in the UK and internationally.
