Computer methods for assessing reliability of complex structures

Summary of the impact

The Computational Mechanics and Reliability Group at the University of Greenwich has been developing computational methods for predicting material behaviour and component reliability since the late 1990s. This case study details economic and environmental impacts and impacts on practitioners. In particular it shows how our expertise has:

  • substantially aided companies to predict reliability of new electronic systems before physical prototyping providing significant cost savings;
  • enabled companies to assess impact of new materials that address environmental legislation;
  • provided information to the Cutty Sark Trust in help maintain this national maritime treasure.

Passively safe street furniture

Summary of the impact

Dr Richard Brooks and his team at the University of Nottingham have been investigating the high strain rate behaviour of composite materials since 2003. This has led to the development of two products that are being installed in streets in the UK and Ireland by East Midlands SME Frangible Safety Posts Ltd. The direct benefits to the company have been: the installation of 900 products in the UK and Ireland; saving of £17k capital cost and 2 months in terms of time to market per product developed and; raising of £1.8M investment to bring the products to market At least one life has already been saved in the Shetland Islands as a direct consequence of the product behaving in the way it was designed to.

Safer and more economical slender structures

Summary of the impact

Research, led by Oxford Brookes University's Dr Mike Godley and Dr Rob Beale, into the design and analysis of scaffold structures has enabled a better understanding of their behaviour, higher standards of safety and improved design. The Group produced technical guidance to the HSE and authored the design guide TG20:08 (2008); the basis for scaffold design in the UK. The Group contributed to new Euronorms for scaffolding and the UK design guide is compatible with these. Furthermore, the Group informed a pan- European design guide for storage racking systems (2000) that later transformed with little modification into EN 15512 (2009). This is now the basis for the design of all such storage racks across Europe.

Structural mechanics - enabling weight reduction and performance enhancement of composite aerospace structures (for redaction)

Summary of the impact

For aerospace vehicles, the development of new materials and structural configurations are key tools in the relentless drive to reduce weight and increase performance (in terms of, for example, speed and flight characteristics). The economic drivers are clear — it is widely recognised that it is worth approximately $10k to save one pound of weight in a spacecraft per launch and $500 per pound for an aircraft over its lifetime. The environmental drivers (ACARE 2050) are also clear — reduced aircraft weight leads to lower fuel burn and, in turn, to lower CO2 and NOx emissions. With such high cost-to-weight ratios, there is intense industrial interest in the development of new structural configurations/concepts and enhanced structural models that allow better use of existing or new materials. Analytical structural mechanics models of novel anisotropic structures, developed at the University's Advanced Composites Centre for Innovation and Science (ACCIS), are now used in the industrial design of aircraft and spacecraft. Based on this research, a new, unique anisotropic composite blade, designed to meet an Urgent Operational Requirement for the MoD, is now flying on AgustaWestland EH101 helicopters that are deployed in Theatre. In addition, the new modelling tools and techniques have been adopted by Airbus, AgustaWestland, Cassidian and NASA and incorporated into LUSAS's finite element analysis software. These tools have, for example, been used to inform Airbus's decision to use a largely aluminium wing design rather than a hybrid CFRP/aluminium wing for the A380.

The Newport Medieval Ship Project

Summary of the impact

The Newport Ship Project is a collaborative project with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David as the academic lead, working with the Newport Museum and Heritage Service (Newport City Council) and the Friends of the Newport Ship, to protect, understand and display the most substantial medieval ship found in Britain in modern times. Impacts are demonstrated through a) significant developments in professional practice in the museum sector and b) in community engagement and educational outreach spheres which have seen substantial public collaboration and learning clustered around a major heritage project.

The aerodynamic design of the Type 26 Combat Ship for maritime helicopter operations

Summary of the impact

Research conducted at the University of Lincoln into advanced modelling of ship aerodynamics, integrated with helicopter flight simulation, has led to a design analysis technique which has influenced both the design of a specific ship and the guidance given to naval ship designers. It has been used by BAE Surface Ships in the design of the forthcoming Type 26 combat ship. This will be the first naval ship to be designed using a technique that has led to a superstructure configuration which seeks to reduce the impact of the ship airwake on the helicopter, thereby improving flight handling and pilot workload, and maximising the operational envelope of the helicopter and improving pilot safety. The research has also directly influenced the international ship design community through the NATO working group on Ship Design Guidance for Aircraft Operations (AVT-217).

Sandwich structures

Summary of the impact

Research at University of Cambridge Department of Engineering (DoEng) has created a new fundamental understanding of the static, dynamic and blast performance of lattice sandwich structures (a repeating pattern of metal struts between two sheets of metal). Ship builders in the Netherlands and the USA have built over 19 ships worth approximately GB200M using this technology since 1/1/2008 with many more planned. These ships are:

  • less likely to rupture in low speed collisions, which is important especially for river tankers
  • compliant with new standards for the carriage of dangerous goods by inland waterways in Europe at a lower cost, because the designs are simplified
  • blast resistant, which is important when considering potential terrorist threats.

Flood risk management is strengthened across the world as a result of inundation models developed at Bristol

Summary of the impact

A two-dimensional flood inundation model called LISFLOOD-FP, which was created by a team led by Professor Paul Bates at the University of Bristol, has served as a blueprint for the flood risk management industry in the UK and many other countries. The documentation and published research for the original model, developed in 1999, and the subsequent improvements made in over a decade of research, have been integrated into clones of LISFLOOD-FP that have been produced by numerous risk management consultancies. This has not only saved commercial code developers' time but also improved the predictive capability of models used in a multimillion pound global industry that affects tens of millions of people annually. Between 2008 and 2013, clones of LISFLOOD-FP have been used to: i) develop national flood risk products for countries around the world; ii) facilitate the pricing of flood re-insurance contracts in a number of territories worldwide; and iii) undertake numerous individual flood inundation mapping studies in the UK and overseas. In the UK alone, risk assessments from LISFLOOD-FP clones are used in the Environment Agency's Flood Map (accessed on average 300,000 times a month by 50,000 unique browsers), in every property legal search, in every planning application assessment and in the pricing of the majority of flood re-insurance contracts. This has led to more informed and, hence, better flood risk management. A shareware version of the code has been available on the University of Bristol website since December 2010. As of September 2013, the shareware had received over 312 unique downloads from 54 different countries.

CCPN: A novel approach to data exchange between software applications

Summary of the impact

Researchers in Cambridge have developed a data standard for storing and exchanging data between different programs in the field of macromolecular NMR spectroscopy. The standard has been used as the foundation for the development of an open source software suite for NMR data analysis, leading to improved research tools which have been widely adopted by both industrial and academic research groups, who benefit from faster drug development times and lower development costs. The CCPN data standard is an integral part of major European collaborative efforts for NMR software integration, and is being used by the major public databases for protein structures and NMR data, namely Protein Data Bank in Europe (PDBe) and BioMagResBank.

Bayesian calibration and verification of vibratory measuring devices

Summary of the impact

This impact case study is based on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science, University of Kent and KROHNE Ltd, a world leading manufacturer of industrial measuring instruments. These precision instruments (typically flow meters and density meters) need to be calibrated accurately before being used and this is an expensive and time-consuming process.

The purpose of the KTP was to use Bayesian methodology developed by Kent statisticians to establish a novel calibration procedure that improves on the existing procedure by incorporating historical records from calibration of previous instruments of the same type. This reduces substantially the number of test runs needed to calibrate a new instrument and will increase capacity by up to 50%.

The impact of the KTP, which was graded as `Outstanding', has been to change the knowledge and capability of the Company, so that they can improve the performance of their manufacturing process by implementing this novel calibration method. This has been achieved by adapting the underpinning Kent research to the specific context of the calibration problem, by running many calibrations to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method in practice, and by supporting the implementation of the new calibration method within the Company's core software.

Moreover, the project has changed the Company's thinking on fundamental science, particularly industrial mathematics. The value of historical data, and the usefulness of Bayesian methods, is now widely appreciated and training for staff in Bayesian Statistics is being introduced. Thus the project has not only changed the protocols of the Company, it has also changed their practice.
