Aston University has developed systems thinking, specifically soft systems thinking, into a new approach known as the Process Orientated Holonic (PrOH) Modelling Methodology which has been used to model, debate and implement changes to strategy and operational processes in service and manufacturing organisations. Through PrOH Modelling our research has changed the awareness, use, and long term legacy effect in a variety of organisations as exemplified here by 4 cases in which considerable operational and financial impacts have accrued. These impacts have been achieved by (i) increasing awareness of systems thinking, particularly soft systems thinking, by management (ii) implementing use of soft systems thinking (as PrOH modelling) to give demonstrable organisational improvement in specific change projects, and (iii) ensuring a legacy effect of systems thinking practice, as managers' use of systems thinking is more effective after an initial Aston University led project has been completed.
Research at the University of Manchester, focusing on process systems in advanced architecture for large systems, has enabled the development and successful implementation of the Salford Process Reengineering Involving New Technology (SPRINT) method within Salford City Council. SPRINT is a change and innovation method tailored to the needs of the public sector. Having been adopted as the standard for all Local Authorities in 2004, the SPRINT methodology aided Salford City Council in achieving savings of £20M by 2011. It has been further used in projects in Education and Housing where it has delivered cost savings of £0.5M.
Loughborough University research into Problem Structuring Methodologies has resulted in PEArL, a device for framing the manner in which change occurs in organisations. The application of PEArL has changed organisational practice and policy in a variety of environments — including manufacturing, community and scientific settings — with far-reaching and long-lasting consequences. It has been used by the British Association for Chemical Specialities to achieve improved biocidal labelling; in homeless shelters to enhance outcomes for residents in adopting more stable lifestyles; and by Jaguar Land Rover to improve governance and achieve better oversight for senior management across product creation pipelines.
Professor Wright has developed practical scheduling implementations for sports fixtures and officials, with regular clients at both professional and amateur level in the UK and abroad, including the England and Wales Cricket Board and the New Zealand Rugby Union. His expertise also supports `what if' exercises, enabling clients to experiment with new ideas and announce changes with confidence that they will work in practice. His work has resulted in financial gains, substantial savings in skilled administrative time and high satisfaction for stakeholders. His research has potential reach across numerous sports, at all levels across the world.
Research in organisational decision making has led to the establishment of a Sentencing Information System for the Republic of Ireland (ISIS) which enables judges, lawyers and the public to access information on sentencing patterns within the Republic of Ireland. "ISIS enables Judges and others engaged in the sentencing process... to develop their knowledge and understanding of sentencing practices. This ...benefits the understanding of defendants and witnesses, including victims of the entire process. All of this is being done without jeopardizing judicial independence and impartiality" (Source 9). With 7000 user visits annually from 84 different countries, ISIS has international impact on increasing the transparency of judicial decision-making, is widely regarded as a particularly significant development in legal processes, has stimulated public discussion on sentencing patterns and is informing public policy in the management of the criminal justice system.
This Impact Case Study illustrates the impact of our research on clinicians and medical researchers. Research conducted by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) at the University of Aberdeen has developed software enabling clinical trials to be carried out in Germany aimed at creating new diagnostic tools for unborn children in order to identify foetal developmental issues. The research, focusing on time series analysis and dynamical systems, derived clinical benefits in that the Groenemeyer Institute, a privately-run research and treatment organisation, used it in the development of pioneering non-invasive methods for the diagnosis of foetal pathological conditions. The research also achieved considerable reach among the non-specialist public through media coverage in the UK and Germany.
The impact derives from research and development which led to the creation of i) a system and ii) methodology used for strategic problem solving, strategy making, and developing effective collaboration. Specifically, the impact results from the application of the developed Group Decision Support System (GDSS) and accompanying methodology that improves group negotiation and the quality of agreements in organisational settings. The GDSS is innovative computer software (`Group Explorer') reflecting a multi-disciplinary approach that enables effective parallel and anonymous communication between group members to construct a visual interactive model. Direct, and anonymous, communication with the model facilitates the management of messy and complex qualitative views. Use of the GDSS has improved the effectiveness of collaboration, strategic problem solving and strategy making by senior teams in the NHS, DECC, Balfour Beatty, EdF, Land Engineering, Strathclyde Police, and Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), Scottish and Southern Energy, among others within and outside the UK.
Transport crew scheduling research at Leeds University since 1994 produced optimising algorithms and industry-ready software that led to the spinning out of Tracsis in 2004. The software, including upgrades, is used by over 40 bus and train companies who previously relied on manual processes. A minimum estimate of a £230 million saving in crew costs has been achieved in the UK alone over 2008-31.7.2013. Since 2008, the software has been routinely used by bidders in all UK rail franchise tenders, contributing to cost effective, efficient and reliable rail transport. Success led to the Tracsis floatation in November 2007 (market capitalisation: £46.7 million on 22/5/2013).
Bishop and Danicic contributed to the development of novel spend analysis software. Launched in 2011 as a commercial service by KTP industrial partners @UK PLC, SpendInsight has been used by over 380 organisations, including Basingstoke and North Hampshire NHS Foundation Trust, which, alone, cut procurement spend by £300,000 via savings identified using SpendInsight. An analysis produced by SpendInsight for the National Audit Office identified gross inefficiencies in NHS procurement, yielding potential annual overall savings of at least £500 million. The findings of this report were discussed in parliament and changes to NHS purchasing policy were recommended as a result.
The Technology Management Group (TMG) in the Department of Space and Climate Physics (also known as the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, or MSSL) at UCL has developed a range of professional training courses for industry that promote a forward-looking approach to the management of technology projects. Industrial customers have invested almost £2.4 million on the training within the REF impact period, greatly valuing its impact in helping their staff deal with the challenges of modern, complex projects, such as achieving high reliability in network-enabled systems that need to perform in the harshest environments. The training has improved engineering capability and organisational effectiveness for its customers, helping them to deliver excellent performance — to budget, on time and with the quality and functionality required. The TMG has also contributed to a systems engineering competency framework that is being used worldwide in the professional certification of systems engineers.
