A genetically informed management plan for breeding African Wild Dogs in captivity

Summary of the impact

African Wild Dogs (Lycaon pictus; referred to as `AWDs' hereafter for brevity) have been classed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for 22 years. Large, well-managed captive breeding programmes provide a safety net to restore wild populations. However, the management of the AWD population has been difficult owing to an incomplete family record of captive AWDs, which risks introducing genetic disorders caused by inbreeding. A genetically informed management plan developed by University of Glasgow researchers has provided a genetic measure of diversity and establishes a genetically informed pedigree, which is used in the European Endangered Species Programme for African Wild Dogs. This has introduced a more informed means to manage the captive AWD population, to maintain the genetic diversity of the species across the European zoo network (roughly half the world's captive AWD population), with 53 zoos in 16 European countries (and Israel) currently participating.

UOA10-09: Driving clinical genetic testing and biotechnology development based on the International HapMap Project

Summary of the impact

The International HapMap project was a major international research collaboration to map the structure of common human genetic variation across populations from Europe, Asia and Africa. Mathematical Scientists from the University of Oxford played key roles in the development of statistical methods for the project, along with its overall design and management of the International HapMap Project.

Companies have used HapMap as the primary resource to design genome-wide microarrays to make novel discoveries in, for example, pharmacogenetic studies. The size of this market is estimated at $1.25 billion.

One novel discovery has led to a genetic test that is predictive of sustained viral suppression in patients treated for chronic hepatitis C. An estimated 2.7 to 3.9 million people are affected by HCV infection. This test is sold commercially by the company LabCorp and is a significant contributor to the company's testing volume. Finally, the project has been important in widening the public understanding of genetic variation.

Saving Species

Summary of the impact

Molecular and evolutionary research by Dr Jim Groombridge at the University of Kent, (2003 onwards, lecturer 2003-2008, Senior Lecturer 2008-2012, Reader 2012-), undertaken in partnership with the Mauritius Wildlife Foundation, the Seychelles Islands Foundation and Government Ministries of both states, has identified unexpected evolutionary distinctiveness and established high conservation priority for rare populations of birds and frogs on Mauritius and Seychelles. Subsequent studies have led to the recovery of three critically-endangered species and to the alleviation of problems with wildlife disease. Groombridge's research has led to renewed investment of international conservation resources across the Indian Ocean. His work on island species conservation is particularly important because islands host a high proportion of global biodiversity and help define our understanding of evolutionary science; these `living laboratories' also host many of the World's rarest species making them a global conservation priority.

09_Dairy farm profitability is enhanced by the application of quantitative genetics.

Summary of the impact

Impact on productivity, the economy and the environment: UK dairy farmers can select the best animals for breeding using analysis of a wide range of traits, leading to improved productivity, greater efficiency and reduced environmental impact, because of UoE research creating a UK Test Day Model (TDM) and an overall Profitable Lifetime Index (PLI)

Beneficiaries: The principal beneficiary is the dairy industry, specifically dairy farmers who are able to generate higher profits. This has benefits for UK consumers and the economy by keeping milk prices lower. The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions associated with more efficient dairy farming practices has global benefits.

Significance and Reach: The genetic evaluation system enabled by the PLI and TDM has resulted in a financial benefit to the UK dairy industry of an estimated £440M over the period 2008-2013.

Attribution: The quantitative genetic research was led by Dr Sue Brotherstone and Professor Bill Hill of the School of Biological Sciences, UoE, with colleagues at Roslin Institute (UoE; UoA6) and SRUC (also returned with UoE in UoA6) as described below.

Summary of the impact

Research in the School of Mathematics & Statistics in the University of Glasgow has been influential in answering a long-standing question: where do we come from? The fleshing-out of the 'out of Africa' theory has been the focus of two documentary series, The Incredible Human Journey and Meet the Izzards, and has generated income for DNA testing companies in the UK and US by enabling them to offer `deep DNA' tests revealing one's roots from far back in history. The Incredible Human Journey aired on BBC 2 in 2009, reaching 10.2 million viewers altogether, has been watched 100,000 times on YouTube and was broadcast in shorter format in Australia and Canada before being released as a DVD. Meet the Izzards was broadcast on BBC 1 in 2013 to over 3 million people.

3. The Herschel Space Observatory: scientific and technical outreach

Summary of the impact

We have formulated and executed an extensive public engagement and outreach programme based on our leading technical and scientific involvement in the Herschel Space Observatory, a €1 billion astronomical satellite which was launched in 2009 and operated until April 2013. Herschel observed the Universe at far-infrared and submillimetre wavelengths with three scientific instruments, one of which (SPIRE) was built by an international team led by the Cardiff Astronomy Instrumentation Group, and Cardiff astronomers have been at the forefront in scientific use of Herschel and SPIRE. The beneficiaries of our PR and outreach programme include schoolchildren teachers, the media and the general public. The programme has achieved high exposure and impact locally, nationally and internationally. It provides inspirational personal contact and up-to- date material and information which has stimulated widespread and continuing interest in Herschel and also helped to raise the profile of STEM subjects, ultimately benefiting the economy.

Industry investment in a Miscanthus breeding programme for UK and global sustainable energy, and the ethical use of natural resources

Summary of the impact

BEAA has created a world leading collection of Miscanthus genetic resources. This collection and associated expertise has led to an impact on commerce through investments by industry in Miscanthus science and plant breeding. Miscanthus is a highly productive grass which naturally occurs in Asia and is of interest as an energy crop worldwide. A second impact has therefore also been achieved through the implementation of international policy on the fair and equitable use of natural resources. The experience and knowledge gained through this impact has provided an example for others to follow and is being used to support UK and EU legislation and policymaking.

New DNA forensics tools improve sustainable fisheries management and reduce wildlife crime

Summary of the impact

Application of Bangor's DNA forensic research has had major impacts on the management and control of illegal wildlife trade. After initial work providing evidence for criminal prosecutions with wider deterrent effects on wildlife crime, Bangor-led research went on to apply these techniques to trace fish (products) to their source populations to ban illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing practices. Since 2009, this work has improved stock management by the UK government and European Commission, directly affected the Common Fisheries Policy reform and has been implemented by the Marine Stewardship Council as a verification tool for correct labelling of products.

Development of Genetic Tests for Inherited Human Disorders

Summary of the impact

Research by Professor David Brook on inherited disorders has made a major contribution to the human genetics field. The work involved gene identification and mutation detection for genotype/phenotype correlation analysis in patients, which has led to the development of diagnostic tests for inherited conditions including myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), Holt-Oram Syndrome (HOS), and campomelic dysplasia (CD). The tests have benefitted patients in the UK and throughout the rest of the world and in many cases they have been used as the definitive diagnostic measure. The assays developed have also been used in affected families for prenatal diagnosis to enable informed reproductive decisions.

Conservation of the stag beetle, Lucanus cervus

Summary of the impact

Research on the population biology of the stag beetle at Royal Holloway has created impact on the environment (species conservation through an increase in available habitat and in known breeding sites), impact on public policy (production of a species action plan and an EU Directive and the management of woodland habitats), and impact on society (change in public understanding). Using a `Citizen Science' approach, over 250 volunteers have engaged with this research in population surveys and over 1,000 have helped to create breeding sites. The research has helped to implement conservation policy decisions in the UK and EU and has produced many public information guides. It also has resulted in a radically revised Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) national Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) for the species. Furthermore, the research has created impact on practitioners (through enhancement of teaching practices) and brought practical conservation biology into schools, improving the teaching of the National Curriculum at KS2 and 3.
